Anybody growing anything this year? I'm growing varous peppers, an array of tomatoes, sweet potatoes, irish potatoes, radishes, carrots, kohlrabi, spinach, swiss chard, bush beans, beets, onions, and different herbs. What are you growing this year?

P.S. You don't pinch out side shoots from 'bush' tomatoes. If you know what type and name of tomatoes you have, it may be best to google their care instructions if you have none with them.

There are two side shoots on the damaged plant, I am not sure what variety they are, it just said 'Cocktail tomaten' on the side of the pot.
I have planted them in a row in a 'window box' type container - it has a water reservoir as it gets very hot over here.
Thank you very much for your advice Mix, I will leave it in and see if it recovers.

Do let us know, on this thread, how it gets on.

Yes I will do.
Another gardening fiasco today, I had planted a container with rocket salad seeds which were just sprouting nicely, when my cat decided it made a great outdoor litter tray and scratched off all the seedlings in the process! 5 year old tabby now looking for a new home!

Unbelievably, we had snow here this morning! So I can only assume that all my young plants will die?

Ooh, cat flavoured Rocket, could be a new trend? (Not)

Your plants might survive if they are reasonably hardy and if the snow doesn't last long or isn't too deep. I think frost may be worse than snow at killing early plants. Let us know what happens. It's good to learn from others' experiences.

My first thought was I would have to chuck the few rocket seedlings that had survived the cat attack(I can only assume that she had a wee), but when I talked to my partner (who was originally a farmer)
he laughed at me and asked me what I thought they fertilized the fields with, he also told me (obviously a townie) that the local farmers had also collected the 'solids' from the sewage works to spread on the fields. It's put me right off organic, I think I prefer artificial fertiliser!

You get that smell in the countryside sometimes. Many people dislike it, but I always associated it with the countryside so I didn't mind it, but I didn't dwell on the specifics of what was causing it. Everything gets recycled in some way ....as long as we're not eating raw sewage. What worries me more is what goes into sewage these days -medications we're taking for instance, or being given to animals.

Medications people have taken have *always* ended up being tossed in the trash to rot down into mulch or flushed down a toilet. It is only recently that people have been urged to dispose of their medications in a safer way such as taking them to a pharmacist/chemist so it can be disposed of as medical waste (burned at a high temperature).

The worst thing being run off into our water supplies is the weed killers and lawn fertilizers, and I don't mean animal waste. Those are the chemicals that are causing red and brown tides across the globe.

I was thinking of the medicines we consume Mira Jane. To put it bluntly they come out in our own waste (liquid and solid) and go into the sewage system. I'm not sure there's any process for eliminating them from their return to the water cycle.

Things like hormones, for instance, that people take for many reasons including birth control, have been found in water systems like river water but there are many more types of chemicals.

Many years ago, a period property I owned had a blocked drain, a
builder freind came to help and he showed and explained to me all about what happens after you pull the flush. Quite honestly before that time I hadn't given it a thought and in retrospect I would have been happy never to know.
Ignorance can really be bliss!

I know. I'm a bit hung up on what goes down the waste now because I think about it. I really try hard to avoid putting grease and chemicals down, but to keep a clean loo, bleach can't always be avoided.

Just a quick update, the tomato plants have all survived the sudden cold spell with just a few brown spots on the original leaves. However they have grown a lot bigger and stronger, even the one that lost it's top is coming on. We now have lovely sunshine, so I am keeping my fingers crossed for a good harvest, thanks for your advice. :)

By the way, the cat fertilized rocket salad has grown beautifully and tastes great :)

Good to hear it. Perhaps cat fertilization helps. I'd want to wash it well before eating but that's true of all fruit and veg.

I like tulips but I don't seem to be very good at growing them. I plant th e bulbs in the Autumn but not many actually grow by the Springtime and those that do often get too tall and flop over. Any tips anyone?

Does anyone know how to properly cure home grown potatoes? I've read how to do it on the internet, but it sort of scares me. We may end up with a lot of potatoes this year and I'd like to have them keep a while.
