What movies have you seen that have been based on real-life events?

I've seen 'Open Water' & 'Twelve Days of Terror'.

Oh Elusive Dream, I saw "Open Water" as well. IMHO, I don't think I've seen a more predictable, boring piece of work in all my 50 years. I actually fast forwarded the film from the point of where the couple were originally abandoned to the ending credits and didn't miss anything of importance to the flick. As far as films based on reality, I was surprised by the film "Rock Star". Good story, loosely based on the departure of Rob Halford from the band "Judas Priest' and his replacement, Tim "Ripper" Owens, who was the frontman of a Judas Priest tribute band. Well acted and it seemed to accurately cover what life is like behind the scenes of a successful, touring rock band.

Um...A LOT! I have 6,575 ratings at imdb.com, and out of that probably (guesstimant) 15% of those are based on real-life events (in some manner), just too many to name.

Almost every movie that claims to be based on "real-life events" takes so many liberties with the truth that the events are almost unrecognizable. That's sad, because a sizable percentage of the population gets what little they know about history from movies or TV.

Completely agree with Daver.......History according to Hollywood and historic fact, seldom merge (if ever).

I've seen Titanic, too. For those who don't know, "Open Water" is based on American couple, Tom and Eileen Lonergan, who mysteriously disappeared while visiting Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

"Twelve Days of Terror" is based on the 1916 Jersey Shore shark attacks.

"Z" by Costa Gavras. I saw that in the 70s and found it quite gripping but it is a movie about politics and assassination so it won't appeal to everyone.

Several come to mind. "Midway", "Brian's Song", and "61*" are some of my favorites. I do agree that Hollywood does take too many liberties with the facts. The crazy thing is that the completely true story is often more interesting than the stylized Hollywood version.

I've seen quite a few movies "based on true events" but the latest one I saw was "Wind River".

'The Pianist' is based on a true story. And Roman Polanski (the director) was very good about having it close to the truth. He wasn't liberal at all with he truth.

'Schindler's List' is based on a true story, but Steven Spielberg was very liberal with the truth.
