Subject: New Challenges

I've noticed a plethora of new challenges leading to badges in recent times, and I heartily applaud the time and effort it must have taken to implement these.

However, unless it's passed me by, there have not been any similar new crossword challenges for many a month. I must admit to being somewhat disillusioned owing to the fact that there are not even improvements open to me for any of the existing badges which I have gained over the years. This has resulted in my relative absence and loss of enthusiasm from crossword compilation in recent times.

I do realise that there are fewer members involved in the creation of crosswords, but would much appreciate an incentive giving me at least something to aim for in the future!

Do you have a suggestion as to what we could add? Crosswords don't lend themselves to challenges that easily - we can't, for example, easily automate a check for symmetry, the presence of specific words, or minimum word length.

Which more or less leaves raw count and categories - and both have already been covered. Size, maybe, but with only three options, I fear this might just parallel total count quite quickly.

If you have an idea for an interesting crossword challenge, let me know and I can check if it could be done.

The other thing to keep in mind is that it's very, very hard to use badges/challenges to bring in new crossword creators-- it's something we've struggled to do via these means for years and years. And with that in mind, any badges we do to elaborate on the form are going to be targeted to the same handful of creators. There's no major issue with this specifically, but it does mean needing to think a bit harder since there's no question that quantity of output isn't a problem. We don't want every badge to be about bulk quantity though-- it's just not interesting.

Thank you both for your considered replies.

Wesley you said "Crosswords don't lend themselves to challenges that easily", which I fully appreciate.

Kyle said "We don't want every badge to be about bulk quantity." Whilst I partly agree with your view, the provision of multiple crossword grids (of good quality) demands a serious amount of time, thought and effort.

On more than one occasion in the past, I have suggested the addition of a rating option for crosswords, in line with quizzes where it leads to various levels of badges. Also perhaps Editors Choice, might be a possibility.

Whilst the introduction of any of these additions would probably come too late in my years as a crossword author, I would be grateful if consideration might be given to their possible implementation in the future.

I assure that CW ratings have long been on my list of wants too. ;)

I’d like to see Crossword Collections implemented, along the lines of Quiz Lists. I think this would lend itself to a number of challenges.

Many’s the time that sets of related puzzles have been published: sometimes over a long period of time. As an author it would be great to have some way of making this obvious to solvers.

Having had a chance to ponder further on the topics raised in this thread, I would like to see the author rainbow awards extended to crossword writing.

These are very good recommendations here. Similar to how quizzes have different types (MC, classify, match, etc) that have upgrades for, CW's have different grids or other variables like being a pangram, having all answers with 'A', etc. Maybe certain prompts like a CW rainbow and different letter variables can be badged up.

As Wes noted, criteria based on the structural contents of the crossword may not be a straightforward solution for this as there is currently nothing built into the site to track those elements, so while it's easy for us to make challenges like that informally in the Lounge, it's a different beast entirely to have the site track whether or not someone's writing a pangram crossword or making a certain shape or using certain words/letters.
