Goldfish Trivia Questions

1. Which goldfish is prized for enormous headgrowth and fat, egg-shaped body?

From Quiz
Do You Know Your Fancy Goldfish?

Answer: Lionhead

The lionhead was bred in China to resemble the mythical lion-dog of China, like the Pekingese dog. I own one of these fish, and he is fun to watch because he is so fat and has such a cute face! Lionheads have no dorsal fin.

2. Todd butts in with a question: "Feeding regimes are all very well, but you must understand immigration issues surrounding goldfish. Which country do you think our earliest domestic ancestors hailed from?"

From Quiz Interview with a Goldfish

Answer: China

Todd looks at you gravely, then comments "A lot of people don't know we're Chinese. We are carp with a genetic 'error' that causes us to be such a striking colour. We were kept as living decorations in the Tang and Song dynasties, and gradually exported first to Japan, then Europe. I and my friend are very cosmopolitan, and we hope that anyone applying for this position will respect that."

3. What is the common name for the Demekin goldfish?

From Quiz Do You Know Your Fancy Goldfish?

Answer: Telescope Eye

The Demekin, or Telescope Eye, has eyes that protrude from the sides of the head. It is also known as the Black Moor, Dragon Eye, or Popeye. Sharp objects in the aquarium can puncture this fish's delicate eyes.

4. This cousin of the goldfish makes an excellent pond fish, and has whiskers like a catfish below the mouth.

From Quiz Do You Know Your Fancy Goldfish?

Answer: Koi

The Koi is a cold-water fish that can survive a below freezing winter in an outdoor pond if the pond is circulated and protected from the snow and ice.

5. This fancy goldfish most resembles an ordinary goldfish and is sometimes mistakenly sold under the name of Comet

From Quiz Do You Know Your Fancy Goldfish?

Answer: Shubunkin

The Shubunkin is a Japanese goldfish with calico (red, white, black, and blue) coloring. There are three different types of Shubunkin on the market-the American Shubunkin, with a forked tail; the Bristol Shubunkin, with a moderately forked tail shaped like a B; and the London Shubunkin, with a short, rounded tail. I own an American Shubunkin, and he loves attention.

6. Copper the goldfish wants to know: "I like eating so much, I sometimes accidentally try to eat my owner's fingers. What will you do if I forget that your fingers aren't food, and try to eat you?"

From Quiz Interview with a Goldfish

Answer: Nothing - goldfish can't do any damage

Copper notes: "I'm just a baby, but even full-sized goldfish can't maul a human. Please don't have me put down, and I promise not to give you rabies or anything. You don't need to rest and drink, although teadrinker, our owner, appears to do nothing except lie on the sofa and drink tea. She also watches TV, which we enjoy, because goldfish just love to see things going on around them, and we hope our sitter won't mind if we come to the front of our bowl to watch TV with them.

7. Which Fancy Goldfish has a large hump behind the head, a deep body, and can be long- or short-finned?

From Quiz Do You Know Your Fancy Goldfish?

Answer: Ryukin

Ryukins are hardy, beautiful fish, and can grow to a size of 8 inches in length. Red and white is the most popular color combination. I also own one of these in the red and white color combination, and he is a real beauty.

8. A few days after setting up the tank and adding the fish, Goldie's water becomes very cloudy as the water cycling process begins. What is this condition better known as?

From Quiz Keeping Goldfish

Answer: New Tank Syndrome

"New Tank Syndrome" occurs when a new tank is set up for the first time and the nitrogen cycle has not yet established itself. The water may appear cloudy for several weeks as the essential bacteria that break down fish waste develop.

9. Unless a colony of bacteria is established in the tank to break it down, which chemical excreted by goldfish can be harmful, even deadly to the goldfish?

From Quiz Do You Know Your Fancy Goldfish?

Answer: Ammonia

Ammonia is excreted by goldfish through their gills and waste, and can kill the fish. Nitrate is harmless to goldfish, and chlorine should be removed from new water with a liquid or tablet dechlorinator before it is added to the tank. Methane, as far as I know, is not produced by goldfish.

10. Which Fancy Goldfish has eyes turned upward to look "toward the heavens"?

From Quiz Do You Know Your Fancy Goldfish?

Answer: Celestial

The Celestial is a small Fancy Goldfish with eyes that are turned up, and they lack a dorsal fin, like the Lionhead. They are unable to compete for food, as their eyesight is poor, and should not be placed in tanks with more competitive fish. The first time I saw a Celestial, I thought there was something wrong with the fish!

11. Which Fancy Goldfish has raised scales all over the body and a golfball-shaped body?

From Quiz Do You Know Your Fancy Goldfish?

Answer: Pearlscale

The Pearlscale is an interesting-looking fish with domed scales, which look like pearls glued on the body. It can have Oranda-like headgrowth, bubble-like domes, or no headgrowth. The Phoenix has an egg-shaped body, no dorsal fin, and a long tail. The Edo Nishiki is a calico Ranchu produced by crossing a Ranchu and an Azuma Nishiki.

12. Sadly, Copper has been taken ill. Can you diagnose this common goldfish illness? "My tail is ragged, with white edges. I'm off my food, and generally feeling and looking a bit grotty"

From Quiz Interview with a Goldfish

Answer: Fin rot

Copper wheezes painfully: "The vet says it's fin rot, probably caused by poor water quality. I have to take anti-biotics, and I could pass over to the big bowl in the sky. Ich and white spot are both scale infections, and swimbladder disease causes balance problems."

13. All this interviewing has made Copper and Todd very tired and ready for a nap, but they have noticed a slight problem. They yawn: "People aren't sure whether goldfish sleep or not. Why is it so hard to tell?"

From Quiz Interview with a Goldfish

Answer: Goldfish don't have eyelids, so they can't close their eyes, meaning they always appear awake

The goldfish reply together: "Tragically, fish have no eyelids, so we cannot get a good bit of shut-eye at night. No humans are sure whether we sleep with our eyes open, or whether we just rest a bit when it gets dark. But whatever the truth is, we do need to be in a darkish room at night because otherwise we cannot get enough rest, since we are unable to shut out the light. Unless it is dark we will stay up partying twenty-four seven, which will weaken our immune systems, and we might get ill. So please dim the light switch and bid us goodnight."
