To prepare for the character Legolas, Orlando practiced horseback riding, fencing, archery and samurai warrior techniques. Orlando also broke his ribs while falling off a horse during filming. Washing machine. Orlando was visiting a friend's new apartment when he noticed that the balcony was only a few feet over and down from the window he was standing at. The adventurous young man decided he could just jump onto the drainpipe and then across and down to the balcony. Unfortunately, the drainpipe was old and falling apart and collapsed. Orlando plummeted 3 stories before landing on another balcony, pinned between a washing machine and the wall of the balcony. No one was home in the apartment, so they had to bring in a helicopter to transport him to the hospital. He had broken his back, but luckily recovered and escaped paralysis.
