To prepare for the character Legolas, Orlando practiced horseback riding, fencing, archery and samurai warrior techniques. Orlando also broke his ribs while falling off a horse during filming. To make himself appear more elf-like he had to wear prosthetic ears, a blonde wig, blue contact lenses, and powder his skin.
