Arlington, Virginia. Sandra was the first of two sisters born to Helga and John Bullock. Her father was an American voice teacher, and her mother was a German opera singer; Helga died in 2000. Sandy's younger sister Gesine is three years her junior. Having been born into the entertainment industry, Sandra and Gesine spent their early childhood on the road with their parents, dividing time between the United States and Europe. The family settled back in the Washington, DC area when Sandy was a young teenager.



Sandra has portrayed a wide variety of film characters, including a computer expert, several law enforcement officers, and a practicing witch. Her popularity permits Sandy the luxury of choosing her film projects and roles. There is one type of role she has steadfastly refused to accept. What type of role is that?

Fairly early in her film career (1993), Sandra portrayed the character Alyssa Rothman in a truly dreadful B-movie, "Fire on the Amazon" (also known by the alternate title "Lost Paradise"). That role featured a dimly-lit love scene in which Alyssa appeared to be topless. Although Sandra did film the scene, she literally covered her breasts and nipples with duct tape to ensure they would not be visible on camera. Sandy has described the experience as one of the low points of her career, and the film itself as, "A horrible piece of garbage." Since then, she has refused all roles involving any form of nudity. Sandra has played several characters who smoked, including her roles in "Speed" and "The Net". In "28 Days" her character was both a smoker and an alcohol abuser, who stole a limousine and crashed it while driving under the influence.



One of Sandra's earliest starring film roles was in the 1992 romantic comedy "Love Potion No. 9". She portrayed Diane Farrow, a frumpy biochemist who experimented with a mystical potion that made her irresistible to the opposite sex. How was the love potion taken?

As an oral spray. The potion was taken orally, like an aerosol breath spray. Both Diane and her biochemistry partner Paul Matthews (Tate Donovan) experimented with the magical spray ("Love Potion No. 8"), turning both of their love lives upside-down. Later, realizing that he and Diane were meant to be together - not with any of the people who'd been influenced by their use of the potion - Paul obtained another elixir ("Love Potion No. 9") to counteract the effects of No. 8 and win Diane's hand.



Director Jan de Bont's 1994 blockbuster "Speed" is often credited with launching Sandra's rise to stardom. What character did she portray in that action drama?

Annie Porter. Before Sandra was cast as Annie Porter, the role was offered to model/actress Halle Berry. Fortunately for Sandy's fans, Ms. Berry declined the part. In a 1996 interview, Sandra told "Premiere" magazine, "Everyone told me to pass on 'Speed'. I heard, 'You're not going to do the bus movie... chuckle chuckle.' It was the industry joke." To her subsequent regret, Sandra reprised her role as Annie Porter in the ill-fated 1997 sequel, "Speed 2: Cruise Control". Regarding that experience, she later told Reuters, "I just didn't know when to step out of a project if I felt the script wasn't being developed properly. I went into it with the best intentions, but its failure was the best thing for me on a lot of levels. It proved a lot of things that I felt to be true to begin with, and it placed me in a situation that I was more comfortable with because nobody cared about me after it was done. I failed and was on the outs and I was able to go back and concentrate on things I loved."



In the 1995 techno-thriller "The Net", Sandy starred as Angela Bennett, a computer programming expert who led a very sheltered "computer geek" existence. When she finally ventured out for her first real vacation in years, Angela unwittingly became involved in a high-tech conspiracy, and suffered a serious problem as a result. What happened to her?
