Exhaustion. Rumors ran rampant as to the reason. Despite speculation to the contrary, exhaustion was the reason given. According to an 11/27/04 article in Variety Magazine, "'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' was shut down for six shooting days due to Vincent D'Onofrio's hospitalization for exhaustion. Back onstage Tuesday with D'Onofrio (Detective Robert Goren) on hand, I spoke to him in his dressing room via phone. He sounded fine and assured me that he was indeed OK. He insisted the cause of his absence was strictly 'exhaustion'." This was the impetus for the show adding Chris Noth as an alternate major case detective to take some of the pressure off D'Onofrio.
