Gleason, Jackie
Herbert John Gleason . His mother hated the name Herbert, but his father insisted he be named after him. His mother called him "Jackie" from the start, and made everyone else call him that, too.
His birth name is Herbert Walton Gleason Jr, and he was baptised John Herbert Gleason.
February 26, 1916. Jackie was the second child of Herb and Mae Gleason. They had one other son, Clemence, who died at the age of 14.
9. Herb disappeared on December 15, 1925. Jackie heard nothing about him until the mid-fifties, when he heard his father died in Connecticut at the age of seventy-six.
Dumont. The show ran from 1950 to 1952. This is the show that made Jackie a star, and introduced the nation to Jackie's wonderful characters. (Reggie Van Gleason, Joe the Bartender, The Poor Soul, etc.)
f. Tom and Anne Dennehey managed the tenement that Jackie grew up in. They were very kind to the Gleasons, and Jackie never forgot it. When Mae Gleason died on April 12, 1935 of erysipelas, the Dennehey's offered Jackie a home, but he wanted to move to Manhattan. Jackie was 19, and had 36 cents to his name!
t. His first two songs were "Melancholy Serenade" and "Lover's Rhapsody". He wrote the songs for Marilyn Taylor, who later became Jackie's third wife. She is the younger sister of choreographer June Taylor. She joined the June Taylor Dancers as a teenager.
Melancholy Serenade. I think all of Jackie's music had a haunting quality. You can especially hear it in the movie "Gigot". Jackie composed the entire musical score for the movie. Beautiful stuff!
You're My Greatest Love. All of these songs are on Jackie's album "And Awaaay We Go!"

You're In The Picture. Jackie came on the air the following week and apologized for this fiasco. As a joke, he tried to find someone to blame. His choice?? I quote Jackie himself: "It's the guy who says, 'You're on the air!'"
