Secretary of the Air force, Dr. Sheila Widnall said at the ceremony, "we're here today to extend a symbol of thanks to a man who has brought cheer and moral support to men and women of the service for well over 50 years," adding that the comedian began his tours even before the Air Force came into being. In 2001, it was the 'Spirit of Bob Hope' that transported the pilots and crew, of the reconnaissance plane downed in China, back to Hawaii.
