Philip Anthony Hopkins. The 'Philip' was from his mother Muriel's mother's maiden name 'Phillips'. This was quickly dropped and the Anthony shortened to 'Tony' at his own request.

August. In 1996, Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins directed his first film called "August". This film was adapted from the work called "Uncle Vanya" by Chekhov. In this film, Uncle Vanya is transposed to North Wales. This happens at the turn-of-the-century (1899). The arrival of the tyrannical owner and his wife, to the estat turns peace into havoc.
"Slipstream" was a drama which Hopkins directed and scored. "Slipstream" appeared at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007. The story focuses around an aging screenwriter named Felix Bonhoeffer, who lives his life both in reality and internally. As he is working on the script of a murder mystery he isn't aware that his brain is about to blow internally. He starts to see the characters of his script appear in his life, as well as himself appearing in theirs.
"The Bounty" from 1984 and "The Road to Wellville" from 1994, were both films that he played parts in before ever becoming a director. "The Bounty" is a tale of Lieutenant Bligh and his cruelty which eventually lead to mutiny aboard his ship.
