The secret, kept for 15 years, was that he did the character only briefly and the character was soon passed off to Bob Zmuda (Kaufman's writer) Most of the TV appearances of Tony Clifton are actually Zumda, not Kaufman.
Latka Gravas/Vic Ferrari. Andy wanted to bring something interesting to the show, and came up with the character Vic Ferrari, a smooth, yet obnoxious character.

Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman. The legeal name on Andy Kaufman's birth certificate was Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman. He was born in New York City on January 17, 1949, and was the first son of Stanley and Janice Kaufman. Andy grew up in New York in the town of Great Neck. He attended Great Neck North High School in 1967. He later attended Boston's Graham Junior College.
Santa Claus. One of Andy's last performances, Santa Claus flew in his sleigh in the Carnegie Hall spectacular. He also took a whole auditorium full of people to get milk and cookies.
Elvis Presley. Of all Elvis impersonators, he was the real Elvis' favorite.
Jim Carrey . Jim Carrey had enveloped himself into Andy Kaufman. Ironically, they were born on the same day, and have similar acting techniques.
Jerry "The King" Lawler. A spat broke out on the "Late Show with David Lettermen," when Andy threw coffee at Lawler. But this, like almost all of Kaufman's shows, was a staged gig.
Lung Cancer, 1984. Although he died of lung cancer, Andy was very healthy. Andy had never smoked, did not drink regularly, and was a vegetarian.
