Leaf. Rain and Liberty are the names of two of his sisters. I made Justice up. When Joaquin was little, he wanted a nature name like his older brother and sister.
Martha Plimpton. River did a guest appearance on 'Family Ties' but he was much younger than Justine Bateman. In fact, he played a young genius that was assigned to help Alex (Michael J. Fox) out with one of his courses.

Black. It was dyed jet black for a role he had at the time. Some people consider this to be a rumor, as his hair was belioeved to be naturally dark blond/light brown and, when it was buzzed short it left his naturally dark blond roots, e.g. Barry Lawrence in his book "In Search Of River Phoenix: The Truth Behind The Myth" .
Chris Chambers. In this movie he played a sweet kid who was misguided and misjudged by the adults in his life. His character Chris Chambers was best friends with Gordie LaChance, who later became a famous writer. Chris admitted to Gordie on their trek to see the 'dead' kid, that he stole the milk money. Chris did admit that he gave the money back and still got blamed for stealing it, because the teacher kept the money and bought herself a new skirt. Later in life Chris became a lawyer and was stabbed while standing in line at a store. He tried to break up the disagreement, but to know avail. This was one great movie.
