Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Rickman, Alan
Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman. He was born Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman on February 21st, 1946.
Alan Rickman (in my humble opinion) is a truly great character actor. He's done it all. What was his first major motion picture? | How Great Is Alan Rickman
|
"Die Hard". "Die Hard" was Alan Rickman's first major motion picture. Prior to that he was seen on TV. A baddie, but still a force.
Alan Rickman played Professor Snape in the movie adaptation of "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone". Who was originally cast to play Professor Snape before Alan took over? | How Great Is Alan Rickman
|
Tim Roth. Tim Roth was originally cast and then backed out. I couldn't imagine a better person than Alan in the role.
According to IMDB: "Tim Roth was a leading contender for the role of Professor Severus Snape. Roth dropped out of contention, however, to pursue his role as General Thade in Tim Burton's adaptation of 'Planet of the Apes' (2001)." After that JK Rowling handpicked Alan Rickman.
I first saw Alan Rickman in this movie which was considered the "thinking man's Ghost". Alan Rickman plays boyfriend Jamie who dies unfortunately. In which movie was this? | How Great Is Alan Rickman
|
"Truly, Madly, Deeply". Alan Rickman played all the cello pieces in this movie himself.
Alan Rickman plays bad guy roles like no other. In "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" he is the Sheriff of Nottingham. One of my favorite quotes attributed to Alan Rickman, is when he threatens to cut out Robin Hood's heart with what item? | How Great Is Alan Rickman
|
spoon. Why with a spoon? "It's dull .. it'll hurt more."
One of my favorite Alan Rickman roles is that of the Metatron in Kevin Smith's "Dogma". What is a Metatron? | How Great Is Alan Rickman
|
Voice of God. "Metatron acts as the voice of God. Any documented occasion when some yahoo claims God has spoken to them, they're speaking to me. Or they're speaking to themselves."
Kevin Smith's "Dogma": the Metatron lets us in about a few secrets. For example, Noah was a drunk, God is lonely but funny, God is a huge skee-ball fan, and angels can no longer imbibe alcohol. Metatron also states that the voice of God is so powerful that for a human to hear it they would die. How many Adams did they go through before they learned this lesson? | How Great Is Alan Rickman
|
5. Poor Adam. The interesting tidbits of information were obtained from www.imdb.com.
Alan Rickman also played Colonel Brandon in "Sense and Sensibility". He was in love with the young and vivacious Marianne Dashwood, who didn't learn to appreciate him until after her heart is broken. What gift does Colonel Brandon give to Marianne? | How Great Is Alan Rickman
|
piano-forte. Supposedly one of the movie goofs for "Sense and Sensibility" is that Marianne Dashwood immediately sits down to play the piano-forte impeccably upon its arrival, even without the instrument being tuned.
Alan Rickman played the role of Sir Alexander Dane aka Dr. Lazarus in "Galaxy Quest". A true "actor", Sir Dane has had to resort to plebian roles, namely that of Lazarus on a now defunct television show. Dr. Lazarus is widely known for one saying in particular. Finish this quote: "By Grapthar's hammer you shall be _____" ? | How Great Is Alan Rickman

avenged. Even in alien make-up, Alan Rickman is still the best.
Irish and Welsh. He was born Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman to them in 1946.

He was chosen by Empire Magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history? | Alan Rickman
|
true. He was number 34 in the 1995 edition.
In this movie Alan portrayed a character who wasn't so much alive (he was dead, in other words). What was the movie title? | My Life with Alan Rickman
|
Truly, Madly, Deeply. Costarring Juliet Stevenson, this was a lovely, funny, poignant tear-jerker of a movie. Referred to as "the thinking person's 'Ghost'," it was sadly overshadowed by 'Ghost', and many people missed the superior movie.
For a play performed within the movie, Alan portrayed the quintessential Captain Hook. This movie costarred Hugh Grant at his slimiest best. The movie title, please? | My Life with Alan Rickman
|
An Awfully Big Adventure. This movie centers on a small repertory theatre company in post-WWII Liverpool. Rickman is tremendous as the actor O'Hara, but it is a truly sad and somewhat disturbing movie. I would love to see him do a full version of 'Peter Pan.' By the way, the title of the movie comes from the book "The Adventures of Peter Pan," in which Peter refers to death as "an awfully big adventure."
In a bit of a departure, Alan played his police detective character in the crime thriller "The Judas Kiss" with a different accent. What was the accent? | My Life with Alan Rickman
|
Southern American. Well, I'm not sure I could have been any more accurate. It just seemed odd coming out of his perfect British mouth. At least I could understand him -- Emma Thompson was in the movie too as an FBI agent, and I could barely catch a thing she said! (Greg Wise was another cast member, which makes two movies the three of them have done together, "Sense and Sensibility" being the other).
cello. This film focuses on Nina, a woman unable to move beyond her grief at the loss of her love. So strong is her need that Jamie retuns. Nina is renewed, but then must face the reality of what life with Jamie had actually been like (not to mention the inconveniences that come from cohabiting w/ a dead guy!). Jamie had been a professional cellist. Though A.R. did not do the actual playing, he did a very convincing job of faking it.
People are probably most familiar with Alan Rickman through his portrayal of Professor Severus Snape in the "Harry Potter" film series. Was he J.K. Rowling's primary choice to play that role? | My Life with Alan Rickman
|
Yes. Rowling gave much detailed information to Rickman regarding Snape's future. Wouldn't you like to know what she said?!
Rasputin. "Rasputin" (1996) explored the "mad monk" and his relationship with Tsar Nicholas's family and the royal court. This man makes a fascinating subject of study, and I can't imagine anyone better than A.R. to portray him.
In a complete change of pace, Alan Rickman's voice guest-starred in an American animated comedy. His character was the owner of a local Rennaisance Faire. What is the name of this show? | My Life with Alan Rickman
|
King of the Hill. In the episode "Joust Like a Woman," Rickman played King Philip, who was considering doing business with Hank Hill's "propanery." Peggy Hill (a self-appointed expert on pretty much everything) assures him that his British accent is "really, really close"!
Here's an Alan Rickman quote that I adore: "I'm warming my lips." (It sounds great when he says it...it doesn't look like much in print!) Can you tell me which movie that quote comes from? | My Life with Alan Rickman
|
Truly, Madly, Deeply. Jamie was always cold (being dead, and all). And he was so considerate that right before they kissed (for the first time since his return), he attempted to warm his lips up so they wouldn't feel so cold to her. Isn't he a nice ghost? His continual chill caused some friction between Jamie and Nina. He always had the heat cranked up as high as it would go and slept with multiple quilts, hot water bottles, etc. His fear was that he would catch a cold that would last for all of eternity!
"Blow Dry" is a very funny and sweet movie costarring Natasha Richardson and Josh Hartnett. Alan's character Phil Allen sported a very interesting tattoo on the bottom of his foot. What was the tattoo? | My Life with Alan Rickman
|
scissors. Phil Allen and his son are barbers in the Yorkshire town of Keighley. Allen is a former hairstylist champion who has retired from competition for personal reasons. But ten years after his retirement the next championship is to be held in Keighley, and he must face pressure from his son, difficult memories and old enemies. This movie didn't get such great reviews, but I still enjoyed it. The cast is so good (Bill Nighy is terrific as Rickman's longtime nemesis Ray Robertson), and the over-the-top hairstylists and 'do's are a hoot!
In which movie, whose screenplay was written by Emma Thompson, did Alan Rickman play a man with a troubled past who eventually finds love and happiness? | Alan Rickman's Movies
|
Sense and Sensibility. Alan played Colonel Brandon, and did his usual brilliant job in portraying the character of a sensitive yet emotionally frozen man who finds happiness with Kate Winslet's character. By the way, the always wonderful Emma Thompson won an Oscar for her screenplay and she also starred in the movie. "Sense and Sensibility" (1995) was directed by an amazing Ang Lee from Taiwan, this was the first English-speaking movie he had ever directed.
Alan never appeared in "Pride and Prejudice" (2005) nor in "Jane Eyre" (1996). Alan did star in "An Awfully Big Adventure" (1995).
Alan Rickman had a role in a movie where the two main characters had first names of Alfred and Vivien. What was the name of this movie? | Alan Rickman's Movies
|
Something the Lord Made. Mos Def played the role of Vivien Thomas to Alan Rickman's Dr Alfred Blalock and together they defied racial prejudice in the 1940s America and pioneered the field of heart surgery. Source: www.hbo.com/films/stlm. Excellent HBO movie, watch it! Alan starred in all the movies listed above: "Something the Lord Made" (2004), "Rasputin" (1996), "Dogma" (1999), "Judas Kiss" (1998).
From which film are the following words taken, "Wild Dave is taking you for a ride."? | Alan Rickman's Movies
|
Dark Harbor. Norman Reedus (yummy) played an interesting role in this unexpected movie. I am not going to say more as it might spoil the ending for those who have not seen it and want to rent or buy the movie.
The quote in the question is said by Alan's character, David Weinberg, when he surprises his wife, Alexis, with a boat trip to an island.
Alan starred in all the movies mentioned above, "Dark Harbor" (1998), "Judas Kiss" (1998), "January Man" (1989) and "Quigley Down Under" (1990).
Die Hard. Alan Rickman did a fantastic job as the sinister Hans Gruber in "Die Hard" (1988). Hans Gruber was after millions of dollars, actually hundreds of millions of dollars, worth of security bonds belonging to the Nakatomi Corporation but was foiled by a NY cop, John McClane played brilliantly by Bruce Willis. On a related note, Hans Gruber's death scene (fall from the building) is made more interesting with knowing that the stuntman holding Alan Rickman's hand dropped him on the count of two instead of the usual three, so Hans Gruber's look of shock was Alan Rickman's genuine look of horror. Luckily it was only a 20ft drop onto an airbag.
He also starred in "Judas Kiss" (1998) and "January Man" (1989). He did appear in "Die Hard: With a Vengeance" (1995) but briefly and only in McClane's flashback (the falling from the building scene).
In the movie, "Love Actually", how was Alan Rickman's character related to Hugh Grant's character? | Alan Rickman's Movies
|
brother-in-law. Prior to "Love Actually" (2003), Alan and Hugh had co-starred together in two other movies: "Sense and Sensibility" (1995) and "An Awfully Big Adventure" (1995). In "Love Actually", Emma Thompson played the wife of Alan Rickman's character and also the sister of Hugh Grant's character. The movie is about the love lives of 8 different couples, set in the few weeks leading up to Christmas. The shots taken at the airport at the beginning and end of the movie are real, not acted! The film crew had to seek permission from the people whose pictures were taken, in order to use their shots in the movie. Look out for Hugh's dance in the movie, a real hoot!
Blow Dry. Keighley (pronounced Keith-Leigh) is an actual town and civil parish in the county of West Yorkshire, England, northwest of Bradford, on the meeting point of the River Aire and the River Worth. Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
"The Winter Guest" (1997) was filmed in Scotland, "Truly Madly Deeply" (1991) in London and "Snowcake" (2005) in Canada.
In "Blow Dry" (2001), Alan plays a hair stylist who joins his former wife and son in taking part in hairdressing contest.
Ian McKellen worked with Alan Rickman on a movie and, on his own website, described Alan as "a diligent and generous man" and stated "Alan's special quest for perfection shames me somewhat. He never wants to move on until he has done better than his best." In which movie did they work together? | Alan Rickman's Movies
|
Rasputin. The renowned actor, Ian McKellen, has his own website (www.mckellen.com) where you can find interesting tidbits about the movies he has acted in. The movie which Ian McKellen is referring to in his remarks is "Rasputin" (1996). Alan won an Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG award for his performance in this movie.
"Rasputin" is based in Russia in the early 1900s. It is about a monk, Grigori Rasputin, who worms his way into the Royal Court and lives of Tsar Nicholas II and his family. This is a biopic by the way. Off on a tangent here, one of the children of Tsar Nicholas, Anastasia, was thought to have escaped the massacre of her family. This rumour lasted for years but apparently DNA testing has proven that she did perish along with the rest of her family.
The other movies also starred Alan and were released as follows: "Michael Collins" (1996), "Mesmer" (1994) and "Truly Madly Deeply" (1991).
Alan played the role of Alexander Dane in the wonderfully funny comedy "Galaxy Quest" (1999). In the movie, a Thermian looks up to (hero worships) Alexander Dane or Dr. Lazarus as he is known in the Thermian world. What is the name of this Thermian? | Alan Rickman's Movies
|
Quellek. Go and see this movie if you have not yet done so. It is very funny and you get to see Alan Rickman in a different light. I love his sense of humour and the dry British wit. Hilarious!
