April 1970. Named after a Hindu Goddess, Uma Karuna Thurman was born on April 29, 1970, in Boston, Massachusetts. Her father is Robert A.F. Thurman, a Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University, who studied under the Dalai Lama for almost 30 years. Her mother, Nena von Schlebrugge, is a psychotherapist and ex-wife of Timothy Leary. Her grandfather from her mother's side is Baron Karl von Schlebrugg who was jailed by the Nazis in Worls War II for not betraying Jewish business partners. Her grandmother from her mother's side is Brigit Holmquist, a famous Swedish beauty who posed for a statue in Trelleborg. Her grandmother on her father's side is the actress, Elizabeth Farrar.
