Every full moon he became a monster. About a week after Russell successfully turned back into a human boy, he noticed the moon shining through his window. He looked down and saw that the Monster's Ring had left a scar on his right ring finger. He was shocked when he felt the scar burn and grew even more shocked when he turned into a monster. Russell said to himself, "... that's what you get for not following directions."
He used the ring during a full moon. After Russell saved Eddie from a group of mean teenagers, he flew and landed far away. He grasped the ring with his strong claws, turned the ring, and said the special enchantment that would return him to his human form. He had to reread the instructions and to his horror, he realized he had used the ring on the night of a full moon. He couldn't change back.
Eddie. Russell couldn't turn back into his human self the night of Halloween. He wondered what he had done wrong, so he flew home to retrieve the directions. But try as he might, he couldn't fit through his bedroom window because his wings were too large. So he flew and found Eddie, who agreed to help him. Russell flew Eddie to his house and placed him in his bedroom. Eddie found the directions and jumped out just before he got caught. The two shook hands before they departed.
He grew wings. When Russell turned the ring three times he immediately felt the difference from the previous two uses. Instead of thick black fur like before, Russell grew shiny red scales all over his body. His eyes were filled with flames as well. But the biggest change was the immense wings that Russell grew. He soon learned how to fly.
They trick-or-treated. While in the form of the second monster, Russell joined his classmates in a costume parade. Most of the other students were afraid of him. They played Bite the Apple, but he kept growling at his. The class also played a game called Ugly Faces and tried to make their friends laugh first. The boy Russell was paired with only looked frightened when Russell tried his face, however. Despite the fact that it was Halloween, Russell never trick-or-treated.
He grew fangs. The first time Russell used the Monster's Ring he noticed his yellow eyes, flat, broad nose, and three-inch horns. The second time was even more to the extreme, as Russell grew thicker fur, claws, and long fangs. His horns were longer and had turned red and his eyes were bigger and had become red as well.
The day before Halloween. Having already tested out the ring, Russell wanted to try out the next level. So he decided to do it the day before Halloween at school. Russell packed along some old clothes to go along with his fearsome look. When his classmates were dismissed to change, Russell said the special incantation and twisted the ring twice. The second turn changed him into a stronger, wilder monster.
Spaghetti. Russell had to endure everything Eddie did to him, which included getting tripped, hit, and much more. After using the ring for the first time Russell felt an anger growing inside of him. During lunch one day, Eddie poured chocolate milk all over his food. Russell retaliated by throwing his tray of food on him, and the two were sent to the principal's office. Even after Eddie cleaned himself up, Russell could see spaghetti sauce in his ear.
One dollar. Russell ran away from a bully and stumbled upon "Elives' Magic Supplies." He loved the magic shop and surveyed its wares. The owner spotted him and told him he had exactly what he needed. Russell said he only had one dollar, and the old man said that that was enough. He fetched a small box and presented it to Russell and told him to be careful. The box had flaming letters with the words "The Monster's Ring" inscribed on its lid.
