 Murphy, Jill (Worst Witch)
Maud. The two make a funny pair because Mildred is very tall and thin with long plaits whilst Maud is short and tubby.
Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches. The Headmistress - Miss Cackle is very old fashioned and does not believe in "new fangled nonsense" and trains all her witches in a traditional way.
Tabby . Mildred's cat was a tabby cat because they had run out of black ones!
Ethel. Ethel is a very bossy, nasty and stuck-up pupil whom Miss Hardboom is very fond of!
Pig. Mildred was supposed to turn her into a frog but she had memorised the wrong spell!
Laughter. Mildred and Maud made an invisibility potion instead and were sent to Miss Cackle's office.
A broomstick formation team. Mildred is horrified by this as she is awful on a broom!
It was a birthday present. Ethel casts a spell on the broom so Mildred will disrupt the Broomstick formation display.
Invisibility. The witches were planning on sneaking into Cackle's Academy and changing all the pupils into frogs.
Snails . Mildred placed them all into a cardboard box and carried them back up to the castle.
Green. Miss Cackle wears the same glasses but in a different colour.
Noon. Loads of people went into Mildred's room to congratulate her on saving the school!
Harriet. Harriet thought it was a dreadful thing to do so she told everyone.
Mildred Hubble. Mildred is in her first year and really tries her best. She is not helped by her broken broom and fear of the dark!
Tradition. Part of the tradition was that the cats were black. Unfortunately there were no black cats left and Mildred was given a tabby.
Pink. Instead of making a laughter potion Mildred made an invisibility potion (which is green) by mistake.

2. This is mentioned by Miss Hardbroom when she notices they have made the wrong potion.
A cat on a yellow moon. This is mentioned in the first chapter, in the description of the school uniform: a black gymslip, grey shirt, grey and black tie. The only splashes of colour were a coloured sash and the badge.
Frogs. One of the evil witches was Miss Cackle's sister Agatha.
Snails. Mildred was running away after a broomstick accident at Hallowe'en and found the witches mid plot.

Maud Moonshine. Maud was Mildred's best friend and helped her through her troubles. In America she is called Maud Spellbody.

Harriet. Mildred crashed her broom because Ethel put a spell on it. This ruined the Hallowe'en celebrations. The TV series says that it's Drusilla but she isn't in this book at all.
3. This song is printed in full in the book. The TV series used two of the original verses and made up another two for the theme music.
a bat. The witches at Cackle's never use wands, they don't need to.
grey and black checked dress. This uniform is no more cheery than the winter one. It is even described as dreary!

Eye of Toad. This is because she was singing out of tune, to make Mildred laugh.
Miss Drill. Miss Crochet is not in the books. She replaced Miss Bat in the TV programme.
Ethel. She thinks this because of the time Mildred turned Ethel into a pig.
They were tall. They were not good at sport and tried to cheat using magic.
Miss Hardbroom's private study. Millie went through the glassless, window and landed on the tea table.
