Ohio. Ohio Governor James Rhodes called out the National Guard to restore order after student protesters set fire to the ROTC building on campus. Four students were killed.

Ngo Dinh Nhu. Ngo Dinh Nhu was a brother to Ngo Dinh Diem, and also his closest advisor. Ngo Dinh Diem, also a Roman Catholic, became the leader of South Vietnam in 1955, a year after Vietnam was separated at the 17th Parallel.

Maxwell D. Taylor. Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor was sent to evaluate the economy and military issues. Taylor reported that the economy began to tumble down and that we needed more troops. By 1963, over 16,000 soldiers were sent to battle. This held up the attacks of the Viet Cong for a while, but then Ngo Dinh Diem prohibited the flying of the Buddhist flag which made the communists rebels begin to attack harder.

USS Maddox . Two days later, the USS Maddox and another warship were attacked again by Vietnamese patrol boats 20 miles of the coast of North Vietnam. This time, the U.S returned fire and sank two boats. President Johnson then ordered air attacks against Communist Vietnam.

Red Prince. Souphanouvong was one of the sons of the king of Laos. A half brother, Souvana Phouma, was Prime Minister during much of the war.
Tchepone. Lam Son 719 was an attempt by the South Vietnamese to disrupt the flow of material down the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Tchepone was a hub of the trail and its capture was of great symbolic importance. You get to Tchepone by travelling west from Khe Sanh along highway 9 about 30 km into Laos.
Special Guerilla Unit, SGU. The SGUs were the elite forces in the Royal Lao Army. They conducted reconnaissance of the Ho Chi Minh Trail; ambushing trail traffic; and called in air strikes. Towards the end of the war they were absorbed into regular army units.

Thailand. The PARU were from Thailand and were under the direction of CIA advisor Bill Lair.
Bao Dai. Bao Dai became emperor in 1928, but the French wouldn't let him return until 1932, but he was restricted in his power. During WW II he cooperated with the Japanese, who encouraged him to declare independence in 1945. After the 1964 Geneva Accords he appointed Diem to be premier. In a Diem controlled election, Diem was voted in as president. Bao Dai retuned to France and died in 1997.
Diem was president until he was assasinated in 1963. Ky was premier and Thieu was president in the late sixties and early seventies.
Vo Nguyên Giap. Ngo Dinh Diem, Nguyên Cao Ky and Nguyên Van Thieu were all leaders of South Vietnam. It was Vo Nguyên Giap who defeated the French at Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
Solath Sar. Sary and Sampon were part of the Khmer Rouge inner circle with Pot. Sihanouk was the king of Cambodia and occasional ally of the Khmer Rouge.
Jane Fonda. In addition to the anti-aircraft photo, Fonda also went on Radio Hanoi to criticize US soldiers while insisting that the POWs were being well treated.
Pham Van Dong. Ho Chi Minh - no explanation needed. Ngo Dinh Diem was a president of South Vietnam. Nuygen Cao Key was premier of South Vietnam.
