Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information

    Brigadoon

"Brigadoon" was adapted from a short story called "Germelshausen" about a mythical German village that reappears once every hundred years. Who wrote this story? Brigadoon

Friedrich Wilhelm Gerstacker. Gerstacker wrote this story in 1862. It is considerably darker than the musical and has a bittersweet, downbeat ending (the couple are not reunited at the end).

One of the most notable aspects of this musical is it's extensive choreography. The original choreography was by Agnes de Mille. Which other famous musical is de Mille most famous for choreographing?Brigadoon

Oklahoma!. In addition to her groundbreaking work in "Oklahoma!", de Mille also choreographed "Carousel", "Bloomer Girl", and "One Touch of Venus". Much of the choreography in "Brigadoon" was cooked up between de Mille and director Robert Lewis to replace what they felt were long stretches of excessively saccharine dialogue.

The show opens with friends Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas lost in the Scottish highlands (they were on a hunting trip). What does Tommy admit to Jeff just before they see Brigadoon materialize?Brigadoon

He is uneasy about his upcoming marriage.. Tommy admits that there is "someting wrong" between him and Jane, his fiance, despite the fact that everything seems perfect.

In the "MacConnachy Square" number we meet, among others, Meg Brockie, a lusty (literally!) village lass. What has Meg brought to sell at the fair?Brigadoon

Milk and cream. Meg urges everyone to buy her out because "The cow winna take it back!".

We next meet sisters Jean and Fiona Mc Laren. Jean is engaged to Charlie Dalrymple, to the despair of her ex-suitor Harry Beaton. Harry, in turn, is the object of which village girl's unrequited love?Brigadoon

Maggie Anderson. Maggie does a dance with Harry after the song "Go Home with Bonnie Jean", in which she chases off another girl who tries to dance with him.

Tommy and Fiona meet and are attracted to each other. He agrees to go with her to gather heather for the upcoming wedding and they sing "The Heather on the Hill". What month is it, according to the song?Brigadoon

May. "The mist of May is in the gloamin."

Jeff, meanwhile, is dragged off by Meg, who tells him about her previous relationships with men in the hilarious song "The Love of my Life". How many times thus far, according to the song, did Meg find (or think she had found) the "love of my life"? Brigadoon

Four. They were Christopher McGill, an unnamed "Lowland laddie", an unnamed poet, and an unnamed soldier. The first two abandoned her, the poet was unable to "do it", and the soldier mistook her snoring for a bugle call and marched away (a likely story!).

Tommy becomes suspicious when he sees the marriage and birth entries in the family Bible and notices the dates. What century were Fiona and Jean born in?Brigadoon

Eighteenth. Fiona was born on October 10, 1722 and Jean was born on April 8, 1728.

To explain the mystery, Fiona takes Tommy to see the village "dominie" (schoolmaster) Mr. Lundie. Mr Lundie explains that the town's disappearing act began when the town's minister, Mr. Forsythe, prayed for a miracle to deliver his village from evil influences. What, specifically, was Brigadoon threatened by?Brigadoon

Witches. Mr. Lundie explains that the Highlands were plagued with witches, who lured people away from the teachings of God and put the devil into their souls. When he asks if such women still exist in Jeff and Tommy's time, Jeff responds "We pronounce it differently".

The dancing at the wedding of Jean and Charlie Dalrymple is interrupted by Harry Beaton, who dances with Jean (the Sword Dance) and kisses her, then menaces the crowd with one of the swords and his dirk. Who disarms him?Brigadoon

Tommy. Wrapping a shawl around his arm, Tommy wrestles the dirk from Harry's hand after one of the men knocks away the sword.

In Act Two, Scene 3, the continuing wedding festivities and dancing are interrupted by Mr. Beaton, bearing his son's body. A funeral dance follows. What is significant about the music to this dance?Brigadoon

All of these (It is an authentic Scottish funeral dirge., It was not written by Lowe (or based on his music)., It is played on the bagpipes.). The dance is accompanied by the "pibrochead", an authentic Scottish dirge played on the bagpipes. Although two pipers were present onstage when this was first performed, only one of them actually played because the two bagpipes together were deafeningly loud.

Where does Act Two, Scene 4 take place?Brigadoon

New York. Jeff and Tommy are in a bar. Tommy is approached by Jane, his fiance, who reproaches him for having been anti-social since his return from Scotland. Tommy is distracted by memories of Fiona and Brigadoon; he and Jane quarrel and she leaves. Tommy calls Jeff and tells him he wants to go back to see where Brigadoon was.

What causes Brigadoon to briefly reappear in the final scene, long enough for Tommy to re-enter it?Brigadoon

Tommy's love for Fiona. As Jeff and Tommy are about to leave, the village reappears and a sleepy Mr. Lundie enters, saying " My, my. Ye mus' really love her! Ye woke me up!"

When does Brigadoon appear? The Mist of "Brigadoon"

1 day every 100 years. Mr.Forsyth gave his life to protect Brigadoon from witches on the condition that it would only appear 1 day every 100 years; and that no citizen of Brigadoon could ever leave its borders.

Choose the songs that were only performed in the stage version of Brigadoon? The Mist of "Brigadoon"

"Jeannie's Packin' Up" and "My Mother's Wedding Day". In the stage version Meg has a much bigger role. She also gets to sing her 2 humorous songs, "My Mother's Wedding" and "The Love of my Life." "Jeannie's Packin Up" is a cute number for the girls as they anticipate Jeannie's wedding.

Who marries Jeannie and Charlie? The Mist of "Brigadoon"

Mr.Lundy. "Are we married now Mr.Lundy?" "Aye lad, you're married!"

Which girl wants to marry Harry Beaton? The Mist of "Brigadoon"

Maggie. Maggie, a character only in the stage version, is a dancing role. Her dances include the "Bonnie Jean Ballet" and the "Funeral Dance".

Why does Meg have to sell all her milk? The Mist of "Brigadoon"

"Because the cow wouldna take it back". "I'm selling the finest milk and cream. Come sip it and ye will vow. That this is the finest milk and cream, that ever came out a cow. The finest it is, the price is small, with milk and a cream alac. There's nothing to do but sell it all, the cow wouldna take it back!"

Who convinces Tommy to go back to New York instead of staying in Brigadoon? The Mist of "Brigadoon"

Jeff. Jeff convinces Tommy that Brigadoon is just a dream.

What is Fiona and Jeannie's last name? The Mist of "Brigadoon"

MacLaren. Jeannie becomes a Dalrymple after her marriage to Charlie.

What is Charlie's full name? The Mist of "Brigadoon"

Charles MacPherson Dalrymple. He says his full name when he interupts Jeannie's packin' up.

Why did Jeff call the people of Brigadoon "snobbish"?Bonnie Brigadoon

Brigadoon wasn't on the map. MacGuffie couldn't sell Tommy milk because a 20th century shilling wasn't worth anything in 18th century Scotland; there was no telephone at the tavern because the telephone had not been invented when the miracle happened; and the people of Brigadoon stared at Tommy and Jeff because they were outsiders. However, Jeff called them "snobbish" because Brigadoon was not on the map. It couldn't have been, though, because it had not technically existed for 200 years.

What did Tommy give Angus MacGuffie?Bonnie Brigadoon

a shilling. Tommy gave MacGuffie a shilling, which led to some startled reactions from the locals. Jeff went on to ask Tommy if he had given Angus a "hunk of uranium."

Who had a "yearning" for Harry?Bonnie Brigadoon

Maggie. While Harry was in love with Jean, Maggie was in love with Harry. Jane was Tommy's fiancee and never met Harry. If Meg ever had any interest in Harry (and with Meg, that was highly possible), the script never mentioned it.

Where did Meg Brockie offer to take Jeff?Bonnie Brigadoon

the tavern. Meg offered to take Jeff to the tavern, and the ended up at the open shed. She told him about her escapades in the glen during the song "Love of My Life", and sidled up to him at the wedding.

What happened to Jeff's fiancee?Bonnie Brigadoon

She fell in love with someone else. Jeff's fiancee fell in love with a Russian. He broke up with another girlfriend because they always fought over his drinking, but had nothing else to talk about when he quit. Jeff warned Meg about his snoring, but never mentioned anything about it ending a relationship.

What did Meg do when Jeff fell asleep?Bonnie Brigadoon

She took off her shoes and sat in a rocking chair. Meg did the same thing her mother did when she first Meg's father, and smiled the whole time.

What was Charlie's middle name?Bonnie Brigadoon

MacPherson. Charles MacPherson Dalrymple married Jean MacLaren. Harry Beaton was in love with Jean and caused some disturbance at their wedding.

The "miracle" was postponed. What day should it have occurred? Bonnie Brigadoon

Tuesday. The miracle was originally planned for Tuesday, but since Charlie wouldn't be home from college until Wednesday (and would then have to miss his own wedding), it was put off until he arrived.

    Who danced the Piobrocheed?Bonnie Brigadoon

Maggie. While all are principle dancers in the show, Maggie danced the traditional Scottish mourning ritual for victim Harry. The sad display took place during Charlie and Jean's wedding.

What did Jeff feel after causing Harry's death?Bonnie Brigadoon

nothing. No one was glad Harry died, but the citizens of Brigadoon were thankful that the miracle had not ended. Tommy later remarked that Jeff must feel "dead inside," to which Jeff replied that he didn't. He felt "nothing."
