H
Drake. Drake is alone, center stage. He begins to sing "A Poultry Tale" in which Ida and Turkey are first introduced. Ugly doesn't even hatch until the pre-reprise of "Different".
Shortly after the first song "A Poultry Tale", Ida tells Drake that it's no good for a duck to look like which animal? | "Honk!" A Musical Comedy
|
sheep. This is actually the first line after the song. Drake tries to leave Ida so he doesn't have to talk with her but she spots him. "Drake! It's no good paddling away, I've seen you. And it doesn't do for a duck to look sheepish, it confuses the other animals."
Ida sings about the happiness she has in "The Joy of Motherhood." Who else sings this fun song with her? | "Honk!" A Musical Comedy

Maureen. Ida feels upset because of Drake's poor fathering skills when Maureen comes to cheer her up. Maureen is the only other character present when the ducklings are born. Lowbutt is a hen that we meet in Act Two along with her sidekick cat friend, Queenie. Henrietta is yet another hen.
honk. Ida is singing about how the egg is different from the rest (it is quite larger because it is a swan's egg and not a duck egg) when all-of-a-sudden it hatches. Ugly rises out of the egg lifting Ida upon her shoulders as a result simultaneously proclaiming his not-yet famous "Honk".
his first swimming lesson. Drake has already taken the other ducklings for a swim and has left Ida with the egg-sitting. Ugly then hatches and she decides to give him a lesson. It turns out he is a very talented swimmer and she must struggle to keep up with him.
cranberry sauce. Drake and the ducklings return from their swimming lesson. They are shocked and afraid. Drake insists that Ugly is a turkey in which case he says, "Cranberry sauce," to see how he reacts. Ida then says, "See, he didn't even flinch!"
Beatrix Potter. "Tell me, that big chappie at the back, whatever happened there? He's not exactly your classic Beatrix Potter is he?" Grace said that in reference to Ugly. Beatrix Potter penned such wonders as "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" and "The Tale of Tom Kitten." Lewis Carroll wrote "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and Felix Salton wrote "Bambi." Anderson was famous for his several fairy tales including "The Ugly Duckling."
French. "I heard the children from the farmhouse are throwing French bread into the water. It sounds tres chic . . ." This is said by Maureen. When all the animals are gathering around trying to enjoy the French treat, Ugly feels excluded and the Cat comes to take advantage of him and persuades Ugly to come with him.
Duck a' l'Orange. The Cat takes Ugly to his lair where he leafs through a cookbook, " . . . Casserole of Duck, Duck with Cherries, Duck and Chestnuts, Duck and Pineapple, Duck Pate, Duck Pancakes with Plum Sauce, ah here we are, Duck a' l'Orange." At the end of "Play with Your Food" he shoves an orange in Ugly's mouth.
ball. The children lose control of the ball while the offstage Boy's Voice keeps calling "Duck!" The Cat mistakes this warning as an obvious statement that Ugly is indeed a duck. He then gets hit by the ball in the head and passes out but not before the clever line, "Struck out by a fowl ball."
Which song is sung by the entire company about Ugly's getting lost with the Cat? It is sung right before the reporter first films Ida. | "Honk!" A Musical Comedy
|
The Elegy. "Tonight the ugly duckling sleeps beneath an angel's wings." Ida is left on stage looking off and determined when all-of-a-sudden a film crew appears. It is the worst possible moment for that.
Then comes the obnoxious reporter Jay Bird! That part is for either sex so what is the character named if played by a woman? | "Honk!" A Musical Comedy
|
Maggie Pie. The male is named Jay Bird but the girl is named Maggie Pie. Thus a male would probably wear a blue suit while a female dresses like a magpie.
Every Tear a Mother Cries. Jay Bird/Maggie Pie leaves with this, "I'm going to leave the final word with Ida, just in case her son is out there watching. But for now this is Jay Bird from "America's Most Feathered" . . . All right Ida, it's all yours . . . " The camera focuses on her and she sings this song.
Dot. Greylag is a goose who leads the other geese in a military style. Dot is his wife who acts as a flight attendant during the song "Wild Goose Chase". "Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen. My name is Dot, I am your Senior Flight Attendant and, on behalf of Captain Greylag, I would like to welcome you to this afternoon's flight from Boggy Marshland to some far-flung farm." Barnacles, Snowy, and Pinkfoot are other geese among the countless nameless ones.
a cottage. Ugly wanders into the garden of this cottage after seeing the feathers drop from the sky as a result of the geese getting shot. He sees the shadow of the Old Woman so he sneakily enters the cottage.
sit and chat. Queenie and Lowbutt are two old animals. Queenie (the cat) and Lowbutt (the hen) don't have much in common except for their common interest of needlepoint. When asked what they do all day Queenie says, "We sit and chat and sit and chat and sometimes I will arch my back and let sparks fly from my fur." Lowbutt then says, "Then we sit and chat and sit and chat and sometimes I will lay an egg." To quote Queenie, "What else is there for civilized folk to do?"
Which character appears at the Old Woman's house (Lowbutt and Queenie's owner) disguised as Drake? | "Honk!" A Musical Comedy

Cat. His entire goal throughout this show is to eat Ugly. He comes, disguised as Ugly's father (Drake), in hopes of retrieving Ugly and eating him. When he sees Queenie, though, he discards his disguise and sings a love song with her called "Together".
She is tangled in fishing line.. "I'm Penny. Please, do you think you can untangle me?" Of course Ugly does because he is so kind but is also captivated by her beauty. He has never seen a swan before then.
ugly. Ugly is feeling particularly down at this point, he feels rather ugly but then he meets the Bullfrog (the only character in the show uglier than he is, but has a good spirit about it). The Bullfrog says, "It's a question of taste. But you mark my words, one day 'ugly' will be 'in'." This leads up to the fun ditty "Warts and All".
Warts and All. "Out there somewhere someone's gonna love you: warts and all!" "Together" and "Now I've Seen You" are two other songs from the show. "With Big Kisses" isn't even a song, it's just there to confuse you.
he goes crazy. The next spring the Cat sees Ugly who is now a swan. The Cat then sings "Melting Moggy". It is a crazy song filled mostly with incoherent phrases. This all happens as a result of chasing Ugly for a year and never getting to eat him. He then says, "I quit! I give up! I surrender! I've been working too hard . . . Take me to the Betty Fur Clinic . . . Aaaarrrgh!" He then runs off stage screaming.
the red band. The red band goes to the most distinguished of birds on the lake. Grace has always worn it but decides that she is getting old and Ugly is indeed fine so she gives it to him. "Wear it with pride, my dear, for you are indeed the finest bird on the lake . . . from this day forth, the Red Band shall be known as the Cygnet Ring!"
And they all lived happily ever after . . .
The lass that loved a sailor. They are all names for Gilbert and Sullivan operas. "The merryman and his maid" is the other name for "The Yeomen of the Guard", "The slave of duty" is "The Pirates of Penzance" and "The statutory duel" is "The Grand Duke"
Bumboat woman. Early in the second act Buttercup tells us that she is a bumboat woman. A saleswoman who travels from ship to ship selling her wares to the sailors.
If you please. At the start Captain Corcoran can't quite cope with Sir Joseph and the sailors telling him to say this but he gets to return the favour at the end when things change.
Ralph and Captain Corcoran were swapped as children. Buttercup confesses that she looked after Ralph and Captain Corcoran as young children and accidentally mixed them up. The pair swap roles back to what they should have been, allowing Ralph and Josephine to marry as they had always wanted.
The expression of his eyes. "My pain and my distress, I find it not easy to express. My amazement my surprise you may learn from the expression of my eyes!"(Sir Joseph, H.M.S. Pinafore)
Sir Joseph is horrified at the bad language used by Captain Corcoran and that Ralph, a common sailor, is in love with Josephine, the captain's daughter.
Dick Dead-Eye. Dick Dead-Eye chorused the captain's words in his enjoyment at getting Ralph and Josephine caught. Ralph and the Boatswain are very polite throughout the opera and Cousin Hebe is Sir Joseph's cousin who is also horrified by the swearing. "Don't go near him! Don't go near him! He is swearing! He is swearing!"
Silent be- it was the cat. When Dick Dead-Eye tells the crew that the noise was just the cat, he spoke almost the truth. He was refering to the cat-o-nine-tails carried by the hidden Captain Corcoran. This nine straped whip would have been a terrible punishment for wayward sailors.
K.C.B.. Sir Joseph Porter K.C.B. is the Knight Commander of the Bath, A Knighthood founded by George the first in 1725.
K.G. is Knight of the Garter, founded by Edward the third in 1350. The other two I made up.
7. This song is the opening of the show.
