Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Lion King, the Musical
An easy one to start! Which famous musician worked with Tim Rice in composing the music and writing the lyrics for the stage version of this classic Disney film? | The Lion King - The Musical
|
Elton John . Elton and Tim wrote 3 new songs, comical and character driven, to add to the already wonderful score.
Zazu. This is a very comical song, with Zazu telling Mufasa all the latest news, giving a young Simba his first opportunity to practice pouncing on prey!
Hakuna Matata. This has to be one of the most famous songs from both the film and the musical, and acts as the divide between the two parts of the play.
One By One. The first act ends with 'Hakuna Matata', a very happy, jovial song. In compete contrast, the second act opens with 'One By One', a song sung in African by a choral group, telling of how they need to reamin strong, despite their king just having been killed.
A number of songs in the play feature the Hyenas, particularly Shenzi and Banzai. However, Ed is heard and credited as singing in only one of the songs, but which one? | The Lion King - The Musical
|
Chow Down. Ed is the stupid one of the three hyenas named in the play, and only features in 'Chow Down', with his contribution being a mere "Huh?" early on in the song, and a "Uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-hu" near the end!
Which of the characters was portrayed on stage simply by using a 5ft tall hand puppet, with an actor operating the puppet with one hand in his head, the other in one arm? | The Lion King - The Musical
|
Timon. In my opinion, this was a very clever performance. Despite being able to clearly see the guy operating Timon, once the action begins, he just disappears into the backgorund, with all your focus being on the character he is holding.
The song 'The Madness of King Scar' features Scar talking to his hyenas, with Zazu and one other character present. Who else is present and takes part in this song? | The Lion King - The Musical
|
Nala. It is during this track that King Scar starts to lose control of the hyenas, and realises he needs a Queen to help him rule. He decides Nala would be ideal, but she refuses.
One of the most moving songs in the Musical is 'Shadowland' performed by Nala. It features vocals in English and Zulu. What does the following line sung at the start mean? "Fatshe leso lea halalela." | The Lion King - The Musical
|
This land of our ancestors is holy. Many songs feature African language lyrics, and these help add to the creation of the correct atmosphere and environment for the telling of this tale.
The song 'Circle of Life' features as the opening song and the closing song of the musical. The final song is performed by all the characters, but which character sings the opening song? | The Lion King - The Musical
|
Rafiki. Rafiki opens this play, after an introduction of African drums and a strong musical accompaniment.
A tough one to end! What is the name of the person responsible for creating and writing all the South African style choruses? | The Lion King - The Musical
|
Lebo M. In the film, these South African influenced choruses were only background, but for the musical they were cleverly transformed into principal parts, holding the entire play together.
Tsidii. Tsidii Le Loka plays Rafiki. Julie Taymor the director decided to make Rafiki into a woman.
Aubrey Linch the 2nd. Aubrey Linch the 2nd was interviewed on 'The Lion King' special edition.
Young Simba. Of course Young Simba doesn't sing, for he is now a full grown male lion!
Giraffe. Two Giraffes are shown on the back of the soundtrack, but a lion was shown on the front.
Alligator. Zazu mentions a crocodile, but never an alligator.
The Stampede. The other songs after 'The Stampede' are 'Rafiki Mourns' and 'Hakuna Matata'.
8. Nala has more lines in the Broadway version of 'I Just Can't Wait To Be King', than in the movie version.
Lebo M.. Lebo M. wrote a lot of songs for 'The Lion King'.
To get away from her. She tells him to get away from her after he says 'Tell me I'm adored'.
Oh yes it's beautiful in Africa. 'Kumnandi kwelakakith Eafrica' is sung in the song 'One by One'.
Nala, Rafiki, and the Ensemble. Nala is played by Heather Headley, and Rafiki is played by Tsidii Le Loka. 'Shadowland' is actually one of my favorite songs in 'The Lion King'.
Minneapolis, MN. The show debuted at the historic Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis for a pre-Broadway engagement, playing to sold out crowds. The show then moved to Broadway in October 1997.

Garth Fagan. Garth was well known for his murderous audition process - dancers were only given a matter of minutes to memorize a routine and perform it under pressure.
Tom Alan Robbins. Robbins originated the role of Pumbaa, and has since returned to Broadway to reprise the role. He is quoted as saying his character portrays "the essence of Hakuna Matata-ness" in the book Pride Rock on Broadway.
Hairball. Just after the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" ends, Simba "pounces" on Timon, who responds with: "You big hairball! What is it with you lately...?"
