Once On This Island
tree. From "And the Gods Heard Her Prayer". Asaka sings this, the first line of the song-
"I should find a tree, all covered in mangos, a juicy mango, fat and well fed. Pick a mango."
Description: Poor black peasant who is adopted; her name means little orphan. Who was it? | Once On This Island!
|
Ti Moune. Ti Moune was torn from her mother, tossed by sea, resting in a tree, where Mama Euralie and TonTon Julian found her, and raised her as their own.
Asaka. From "Pray", when all the peasants and gods are discussing why Daniel is keeping Ti Moune with him, Asaka says that she "probably makes him rise like yeast!"
My favorite line, as well as my friend Tina's, who played Asaka in our production of OOTI.
Description: A young, rich grandhomme who is in a terrible car accident, wounding his leg. Later he betrays his love for a "proper" woman. Who is it? | Once On This Island!
|
Daniel. Daniel crashes his car in a rainstorm that Agwe sent to push Daniel and Ti Moune together. Ti Moune cares for him while TonTon goes to find Daniel's people. Ti Moune then goes after Daniel when the guards take him away, and the two fall in love. He betrays Ti Moune by marrying Andrea Deveraux, whom he has been promised to since childhood.
The quote "And was she ever frightened? Or was her love too strong? And did she know she'd end up/in our story and our song?" comes from which song? | Once On This Island!
|
Some Say. Little Ti Moune sings this to the storytellers in "Some Say", when we see Ti Moune's journey to the city.
Papa Ge. "Papa Ge, sly demon of death" sings this in "Forever Yours (Reprise)". In "Forever Yours," Ti Moune tells Papa Ge to take her life instead of Daniel's life. But now that Daniel betrayed her, Papa Ge tries to convince Ti Moune to kill Daniel instead of letting Papa Ge take her life.
Description: A well-bred woman, intent on making sure that Ti Moune knows that she is just a lowly peasant. This woman is going to be the one to marry Daniel. Who is it? | Once On This Island!
|
Andrea. Andrea makes it a point to tell Ti Moune that it is she, Andrea, who is marrying Daniel, and Ti Moune has no chance of making Daniel change his mind. Andrea and Daniel have been promised to each other since they were young. Daniel does, indeed, end up marrying Andrea, and consequently, killing Ti Moune.
Complete the phrase: "Armand took his pleasure, with the women who served him..." Who were the women who served him? | Once On This Island!

Black peasant girls, from the village beyond. From "The Sad Tale of the Beauxhommes" where the Beauxhomme's history is revealed.
This quote: "Walk with me, little girl, don't you be a-fraid. Follow me little girl, let me be your guide." is from what song? | Once On This Island!

Mama Will Provide. One of my favorite songs, "Mama Will Provide" is an up-beat, fun tune as Ti Moune makes her way from her village to the city. Asaka sings it, with the other gods and storytellers singing in the background.
him at the gate.. This is part of Ti Moune's monologue at the end of the musical, after she is cast out of the Hotel Beauxhomme. She wants Daniel to come out and talk to her, to let her explain. Shortly after, she dies, and the last song is sung.
Ti Moune. In the Bonhill Community Dance and Drama Group (BCDADG) March 2006 production, this part was brought to life by Rachael Pender and Sarah Earnshaw who shared the part between them. This part is the lead. It is Ti Moune's story of life, love and death.
We Dance. This is possibly one of the best songs of the show. It combines singing, dancing and acting. And sets the scene for the rest of the show: the storm that leads Ti Moune to Mama Euralie and Tonton Julain; the second storm that brings Daniel to her; the third that leads her to Daniel on the other side of the island; and the fourth that ends her.
4. These parts in the BCDADG production were played by myself, Kelly Keirnan, Ross McPherson and Rebecca Macindoe. These parts are maybe the hardest in the show. There are a very broad range of vocals in the songs the Gods sing and it is difficult to hit some of the notes if they are not in your normal vocal range.
Daniel. This role in the BCDADG production went to Jamie MacIntyre. Daniel is a complex part, he must battle his feelings of true love for Ti Moune with what his head (and his Father) is telling him to do: to do his duty and marry Andrea, the woman he is promised to.
Agwe. Ross McPherson played this part in the BCDADG version, and, needless to say, blew it out of the water. Agwe is one of the villainous Gods, he is the one that plans to make Daniel's car skid so that he is hurt and Ti Moune finds and saves him.
Erzulie. Rebecca Macindow did this role for BCDADG, with an amazing motherly feel. Erzulie is possibly the nicest of the Gods. She wants Ti Moune to succceed in her quest for true love and it is Erzulie who brings them together eventually.
Asaka. Kelly Keirnan portrayed this character for BCDADG and her tap-dancing was spectacular. Asaka is the other nice God, she leads Ti Moune through the wreckage of the storm to Daniel on the other side of the island.
Papa Ge. This was my part in the BGDADG production. My first singing role and I loved it! It was strange to be in a male part, but I could sing lower than the other guys that auditioned. Papa Ge is the bad guy among the Gods. It's because of him that Ti Moune gives up her soul and dies in the end; she has promised her life to Papa Ge in exchange for Daniel's. When Daniel goes off with Andrea, Ti Moune owes Papa Ge a debt he wants back.
We Tell The Story. This is another great song. It ends the story well. It shows that no matter where you are, what you do, people remember you for the good things you've done.
4. These parts in the BCDADG version were played by Erin Crombie, Stephanie Calqhoun, Hannah Gall and Jennifer Herd. These four help to lead the audience along.
