Anderson, Laurie Halse
Mitchell. Mitchell is her boyfriend. He received early acceptance from Harvard and is in Kate's Mythology class. Travis is Sara's (Kate's best friend) boyfriend. Toby is Kate's sister. Mikey is Teri Litch's brother.
47. According to Kate, his hobbies include religion, football, and losing hair.
Chicken and Biscuit Night. Kate works as a server in the kitchen at the dinner.
Ms. Cummings. Ms. Cummings is the AP Chemistry teacher and helped turn Kate on to nanotechnology, get over her biochem prejudice, and supervised all of Kate's science fair entries.

Nell, Robert, William. Robert and William are the two sons of Joseph, a friend of Eliza's who she cared for while he had the fever. Nell was a girl Mattie found on the streets whose mother had died from the fever.
During the night after the thieves attacked him. Mattie's grandfather does not die from yellow fever. He has a problem not specifically mentioned in the book that kills him.
Nathaniel Benson. Nathaniel was an apprentice to the Peale family, who were an actual family living during this crisis.
Dr. Kerr. This was a trick question. Indeed, when Lucinda first contracts yellow fever, they call in Mr. Rowley first, but he is not a doctor. The first doctor they call arrives the next day, and is Dr. Kerr.
He fell off a ladder. Mattie's father actually built their house by himself, since he was a carpenter. However, he died only 2 months after he finished constructing the house.
Lucille, William. Mattie's grandfather's full name is Captain William Farnsworth Cook, of the Pennsylvanian Fifth Regiment.
a coffeehouse. The family ran a coffeehouse, which was on the bottom floor of their home. It was built by Mattie's father, who died shortly after building it.
"Now.". This was the last sentence in the book. Since Mikey died, construction on the house stopped and Teri started to destroy the house. Kate wanted to help her re-do the whole house. Even though at the beginning of the book the two girls did not like each other, by the end they were pretty much friends.
Tuesday. Mikey died on Saturday and his funeral was on Tuesday. It was mentioned that the Litches just wanted to get it over with. Many people came to the funeral.
the exact spot where Mikey died. Teri was depressed that her son had died. Even though it was cold out and the house had no power, she still wanted to sleep there. Kate brought her a blanket and stayed with her.
electrocution. While everyone was eating and talking after a day of working on the Litch's house, Mikey went upstairs and touched an exposed wire. He died instantly and the power went out. It was then revealed that Mikey was Teri's son due to the sexual abuse of her father. Mikey was two years old and loved trucks.
Teri Litch's. Teri Litch and her family lived next to the Malones. Their barn collapsed due to the fire and their house was ruined. Kate's father organized a group of volunteers and used money from the church to rebuild their house. Teri Litch and her little brother moved into Kate's house while they worked on the house.
track. Kate loved to run. She ran almost every night at around midnight. She liked the feeling of control that she got while running.
Toby. Toby was fourteen. Kate said that his hobbies were trombone and soccer. Toby was a pretty good brother and helped around the house.
Speak. "Speak" and "Catalyst" both took place in the same town. "Catalyst" was set a year after "Speak". Also the main character from "Speak", Melinda, appeared briefly towards the beginning of the book and Kate mentioned what happened to her the year before. Other than that, the books did not connect.
minister. Her dad was the minister at the church next to their house. He was 47. Kate said that his hobbies were religion, football, and losing hair. Her mom had died when she was young.
