Cigarettes, the Evening Standard. In Septimus' broken routine he confuses his own cigarettes and Evening Standard for another person's and is ashamed when it is finally revealed that he had been making the mistake.
Paris. Henry is a successful man who, after leaving Britain during the war period, returns to find that life as he knew it is very different and his high-society lifestyle is thrown into turmoil. The final twist is definitely unexpected in this story, though is perhaps not as pivotal as others.
Backgammon. This story centres on a Backgammon tournament which resulted in the clear favourite losing in a closely fought contest. The main character is a journalist looking for a story and as he delves into what really happened in the match he discovers something is not quite right.
Graham Construction. Graham Construction is trying to build a Mexico City ringroad in this story, but unfortunately Sir Hamish has some problems with the Mexican way of business, as he feels it is wrong, and therefore refuses to co-operate to his own demise.
Pomegranates. This is a story telling of how Jesus was born and is a good religious tale. The miracle comes right at the end in a typical Archer twist. This story was the only entirely fictional story of the whole book. All of the others have an element of truth.
Brazil. In this story the two companies are stuck in Nigeria after a coup takes place which prevents anyone from entering or leaving the country. As time unfolds, the company managers, although rivals, become close as they wait endlessly for a chance to leave the country.
Thompson and Townsend. This story is about two friends both trying to get the same girl. Unfortunately the girl lives in America and so they make a pact that the first of the two to go to America can win the girl.
Durham. Kerslake, being ambitious, rejected Durham with the lofty phrase "Future Prime Ministers aren't educated at Durham" to his mother. He coveted a place at Oxford, and got there after a lot of legwork.
He married her. Kerslake may well have laughed and bought a drink, but those reactions weren't the answer. He must have had some good points for Elizabeth to agree to marry him.
Old Dungheap. Naturally, Alison liked him immediately; he reminded her of her father!
Sylv. Presumably short for Sylvia. Raymond made a big mistake picking up Mandy, he could have been in BIG trouble.
Yes. Charles had made a very poor speech in the House and this led to his shifting to the Whips in a reshuffle. The job itself brought back memories of his days in the Guards - order, discipline and camaraderie.
Black clothing. Black topcoat, black waistcoat, black knee breeches, black stockings, black shoes and carrying a thin black rod, hence the name. A ceremonial role, with a long history and actually still in use. Archer's research for this novel must have been painstaking.
A politician. Why? I quote, "He never stops shouting at everyone, he's totally preoccupied with himself and he falls asleep as soon as someone else offers an opinion".

His wife in bed with another man. Charles and Fiona never did have much in common, except both being fearful snobs.
He sent a man from Christies' auction house. Mrs Bloxham had an antique table which Andrew had admired on visiting her, and knowing that she was struggling with money, he contacted Christies' auction house and they sold the table for 1400 pounds. This book was first published in 1984 - that money would have been worth a bit then.
Yes. Interesting what a man can get used to! I get the impression from re-reading that he didn't like it at first but it grew on him.
Milburn took an opposing view to Seymour's advice. Milburn said to Kerslake "I knew you were the right man for the job as soon as Charles Seymour phoned and warned me to avoid you like the plague."
He'd forgotten to open it. Gould was, by now, sleeping with Kate Garthwaite in London and almost completely forgetting his wife in Yorkshire.

The family's collection of paintings. Fiona didn't have enough time to disperse them all. Charles and the private detective managed to steal the paintings back again, except one, and that one was possibly the most valuable to the Seymour family.
She applied in her maiden name of Drummond. She had replied to the advertised vacancy, then bought a wig, applied too much makeup, wore a dress she didn't like and managed to say 'Good morning' to her husband in the street without him recognising her. After being granted the job she then confessed her real identity and kept the job!
She knew that Pimkin was gay. Amanda would have worked out that because Pimkin was gay, he therefore had no interest in her body and she would always meet other men when he was around.

The Eleventh Commandment. ‘The Eleventh Commandment’ features Helen Dexter, the first woman chief of the CIA who is a thorn in the side for many US Presidents. Dexter is running her own operations without the knowledge of the President.
Honour Among Thieves. The book ‘Honour among Thieves’ features a plot by Saddam Hussein to steal the Declaration of Independence and destroy it in a rally in Baghdad to humiliate the Americans and President Clinton.
