Hinamori Momo. Hinamori's Zanpakuto, Tobiume is a kido-type Zanpakuto. Urahara's Benihime is released with the chant "okiro" (awaken). Syazel's Fornicaras is activated by "susure" (sip) and Cirucci Thunderwitch's Golondrina, "kakire" (rip off).

Two crescents back-to-back. Nelliel Tu Oderschvank's (or simply Nel Tu) Zanpakuto is called Gamuza and when released, she has the features of a centaur. Yachiru's Zanpakuto has a flower pattern for a guard, while the window-like guard belongs to Byakuya's Senbonzakura. No one has a skull for their Zanpakuto's guard, but Nelliel's hollow mask is the shape of a skull.
Their appearance changes and their hollow powers are released. An Arrancar transforms drastically as they release their Zanpakutos. Their original powers are restored, making their initial release state just as strong as a Shinigami's Bankai. Their appearance changes according to their original hollow form. This is known as "resurreccion". An example of this is Grimmjow Jeagerjaques who turns into a panther-human when he releases Pantera. This reflects him being a panther-hollow before becoming an Arrancar. A Vizard can call out their inner hollow, which will result in their mask reappearing and giving them a power boost. However, this has nothing to do with a Zanpakutos release.
She slings it over her shoulder vertically. Minazuki is tied to a rope and slung over Unohana's shoulder like a strap bag. Sometimes, her lieutenant Isane carries it for her instead. When released, Minazuki materializes into a giant one-eyed ray-like creature which, instead of eating you, will heal you in its stomach.
Izuru Kira. Wabisuke is an interesting Zanpakuto of Kira's. It means "miserable man", and is named so because when one cannot carry their own weight after being attacked by Wabisuke, they would fall to the ground and their heads would be lowered, almost like in an apology. It also has a very odd shape. Matsumoto's Zanpakuto is Haineko which can turn into dust and Yumichika's Zanpakuto Fujikujaku steals its opponent's spiritual power. Ikkaku's Houzukimaru is a spear-like blade which can turn into a three section staff. Ikkaku has also achieved Bankai.
The wielder's spiritual energy. The greater a shinigami's spiritual power, the larger their Zanpakuto appears. However, a high level shinigami must be able to control their spiritual energy and compress the sizes of their swords, otherwise a captain-level shinigami would end up swinging around swords the size of skyscrapers. This is explained by Kurosaki Isshin after defeating the Grand Fisher.
all of these have been seen (Hyorinmaru, Zangetsu, Zabimaru). A Zanpakuto is shown to have a soul and shape of its own, and sometimes its spirit will materialize itself in the real world. Ichigo's Zangetsu takes the form of a middle aged man in a cloak with a flashy headgear. Abarai Renji's Zabimaru looks like a baboon with a serpent's head for a tail. The spirit Hyorinmaru, which belongs to Hitsugaya, is a large, Chinese dragon entirely of ice.

All of these (She encoded it as a word puzzle., She did not explain why she left., She doodled a raccoon in it.). Ichigo had not even noticed there was a note left for him on his desk until Kon pointed it out to him, right after Ichigo found him tied up behind the toilet bowl. When Ichigo opened the note, he realized it was a word puzzle with the only hint being a badly-drawn raccoon (Rukia had written the message in between every "ra", "cc" and "oon", or "ta", "nu" and "ki" in Japanese).

3 days. What usually takes years and years of training and combat experience, Kisuke managed to compress in only three days. However, this method is very dangerous and requires supervision. Renji and Ichigo learned their bankais this way while Yoruichi monitored their progress.

Hachigen "Hachi" Ushoda. Hachi, the pink-haired vizard, was the one that restored Orihime's offensive capability. Hiyori was the vizard Hachi sent to fetch Orihime, whom she found talking to Rukia. Kisuke, in the meantime, was trying to keep Inoue out of future battles and out of Aizen's sight.

Isane Kotetsu. Retsu commanded her lieutenant Isane to inform all the active captains, vice-captains and ryoka about the situation while she tended to the grave wounds of Momo Hinamori and Toshiro Hitsugaya. Both Ichigo and Mayuri learned about Aizen's plan after Isane contacted them.

Karin. Isshin, Ichigo's father, is a doctor and Masaki, Ichigo's mother, died when Ichigo was very young. Yuzu and Karin are Ichigo's sisters and though they are fraternal twins, Yuzu likes to cook and clean around the house while Karin, the tomboy, enjoys playing soccer.

Sora. Sora becomes a hollow and tries to kill his sister, Orihime. Hollows devour the souls of people and their relatives in order to try to fill the emptiness in their hearts, hence the hole in their chest.

Yumizawa Park. Ichigo tells Rukia that the ghost of a five-year old child can be often found at the park, and Rukia tells him that the Hollow will probably be trying to devour the soul of this ghost. Seeing the child's ghost in danger, Ichigo makes a (sort-of) vow to carry out the duties of a Soul Reaper.

Hollows can come in many shapes or forms, except for the fact that they all have masks, and that they all have a hole in their chests, which signifies that their precious memories and feelings in their soul have vanished. Hollows appear from 'Hueco Mundo', a wasteland in which every Hollow lives.

Rukia. Rukia Kuchiki is a Soul Reaper and adopted sister of Byakuya Kuchiki, a high-ranking Soul Reaper. She gives Ichigo his powers in order to save his family and himself. Orihime and Tatsuki are friends of Ichigo, and Rangiku is a Soul Reaper, but is not introduced for several volumes.
Orange. Most of the people at school make fun of him due to his hair colour, but Ichigo does not really care if they do or not. Usually, Ichigo sticks out like a sore thumb with his hair colour making it almost impossible for him to blend in.
Strawberry. Ichigo is a high school student who is forced to take up the job as 'Soul Reaper' after the female Soul Reaper whom Ichigo meets is injured. At first he does not seem to care about or want the job, but grows into it over time. However, the female Soul Reaper is severely punished for entrusting her powers to Ichigo in later volumes. His nickname is mentioned on one of the first pages of the Volume.
Kaiten Anashuba. Kon is the name that Ichigo gives to the defective Soul Candy, which Ichigo accidentally ingests without knowing it is defective. In his body, the other soul gets up to mischief at the expense of Ichigo, perving on girls and jumping around town like a maniac. Despite this, the soul will not physically harm anyone. Ichigo decides not to destroy the Soul Candy, and instead put it in a plush toy, becoming its new body. He names it Kon after the real name for Soul Candy, 'konpaku'. Ise is the very strict 2nd seat of 8th company, in comparison with 8th company captain Shunsui Kyoraku, who lazes around sleeping all day and trying to flirt with women, especially Ise. Menos Grande is the name of a large Hollow, which is thousands of times as big as they normally are. They are extremely dumb however, and are not very tactical in battle. All Hollows, when not in our world, live in Hueco Mundo, a wasteland where every Hollow lives.
Hanataro Yamada. The 2nd seats of the Guard Companies act under their captain. They are almost as strong as their captains, and almost all of them can achieve bankai. Most of the 2nd seats share a strong friendship with their captain, which the exception of a few, such as 12th company 2nd seat Nemu Kurotsuchi. She is an android (part human, part machine) created by captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi. She does not speak a word against Mayuri, out of fear or respect, even when he hits her and leaves her to die for failing to kill Uryu. Iba is 2nd seat of 7th company. He has a distinctive crew cut and wears black sunglasses with his Soul Reaper uniform. He and Ikkaku Madarame of the 11th company have a custom of dueling, drinking sake, then dueling again to see who has to get more. Rangiku Matsumoto is the 2nd seat of the 10th company. She has blonde hair and exceptionally large breasts. She makes no effort to conceal her breasts, wearing loose-fitting robes that expose her cleavage, using them to try to win over male characters, and using them as a topic in conversation. She always complains to her captain, that her breasts are simply too big and how she always has to try hard to look nice. She is very carefree, usually avoiding her jobs so that she can sleep or go drinking.
Ikkaku Madarame. The 13 Guard Companies are the fighting force of Soul Reapers. Each company specialises in a certain part of combat, such as 'kido', which are spells. The 'captains' of the companies are the strongest Soul Reapers in the Soul Society, which is the headquarters of Soul Reapers. Each captain has many special moves of his/her own, and each captain possesses an incredible amount of energy. Every captain can achieve bankai, which the exception of the captain of 11th company. Retsu Unohana is the captain of 4th company, the medical corps. She uses most of her powers to heal allies. Gin Ichimaru is the captain of 3rd company. He is one of the most powerful captains and is a suspect for the death of captain Sosuke Aizen. Kurotsuchi is captain of 12th company, which specialises in Research and Development. Kurotsuchi sees everything as an experimental subject, and he vivisects anything that he wants to and is able to.
Rantentu. A zanpakuto is the name of a Soul Reaper's sword. Unlike a quincy, who uses energy around him to attack, a Soul Reaper uses energy from inside himself to attack. Unless a zanpakuto is of the 'constant-release' variety, which always releases energy, a zanpakuto has three forms, a form which looks just like a sword, a released form called 'shikai' where the sword may or may not have more distinct characteristics, and the final, hard-to-attain form 'bankai', where the zanpakuto has incredibly distinct characteristics and almost has a life of its own. Only higher-ranked Soul Reapers can achieve bankai. Zangetsu is the name of Ichigo's zanpakuto, Zabimaru is Renji's, and Benihime is Kisuke's.
Don Kanonji. Urahara Shoten is a mysterious and enigmatic shop which seems to deal in items for Soul Reapers. It is run by Kisuke Urahara, who is even more mysterious, and who seems to have links with the Soul Society. Jinta and Ururu and the small boy and girl who help around the shop are shown to be quite strong fighters. Tessai is the tall, quiet man who also works at Urahara Shoten, and seems to obey Urahara's every demand. Later on in the manga more is revealed about the shop and especially Kisuke.
Uryu Ishida. A quincy is like an archer, whose bow is created from the energy found around the user. The quincy is named after their emblem, which is a five-pointed star (Quin=Five). When first meeting Ichigo, Uryu seems to hate him, having a grudge against all Soul Reapers, but over time beginning to understand Ichigo and Soul Reapers.
Redd. Chappy is the name of the most popular Soul Candy dispenser with women. Soul Candies are little pellets that a person ingests, which allows their body to remain animated when they are in Soul Reaper form. If someone does not ingest a Soul Candy, while they are out of their body as a Soul Reaper, their body becomes lifeless. Chappy is a rabbit, Blues is a monkey and Gringo is a smoking panda. This information is found near the back of Volume 2.
