Bradford, Barbara Taylor
Francis Thompson. The poem is printed at the beginning of the book, it goes- 'The angels keep their ancient {places;-} 'Turn but a stone, and start a wing! 'Tis ye, tis your estranged faces, That miss the many-splendored thing.'
The Fairley's. Emma worked as a maid at the Fairley mansion, while her father worked at the Fairley Mill.
Edwin. Edwin Fairley was her first love, and father of Edwina. Gerald was Edwin's brother, and Jack was Emma's father.
Winston and Frank. Winston was the eldest, then Emma, and Frank was the youngest. Jack was the name of their father. Elizabeth was their mother who died early on in the book.
Edwina. Edwina Laura Shane Harte was born one day before Emma's seventeenth birthday. Her other children were Christopher Lowther, twins Robin and Elizabeth Ainsley, and Daisy McGill.
roses. When Emma told Edwin she was pregnant, it was in the rose garden that he spurned her and the baby. The smell of roses always made her sick from that day on. Later when she owned Fairley Hall, she had the rose garden destroyed along with the manor.
Blackie. Blackie O'Neill was her true friend.
Pennistone Royal. Pennistone Royal was Emma and Paul McGill's place. Ainsley is the last name of Emma's second husband, Arthur.
reading of a will. At the end, Emma reads her last will and testament, where her children get an interesting surprise.
