her father went blind. Her father was a tile maker, and his kiln exploded, blinding him.
Tanneke. He painted her pouring milk.
he makes sexual advances on her. He's attracted to her from the beginning, and makes no secret of his feelings.
she's ashamed of her hair. Her hair is wild, and she likens it to a prostitute's.
inquires about her family. He finds out where her family lives. After there's a breakout of plague, he's able to warn her that they're in danger.

Pieter the son. Pieter is the son of the butcher, Griet sees him often when she has to go to the market to buy the meat for her mistress's family.
16 years old. She 16 years old, the oldest of 3 children.
Vermeer. She was hired by Vermeer's wife to help with laundry, cooking and shopping.
Chopping vegetables. She attracts Vermeer's attention when chopping vegetables because she has them separated by color. He often asks her opinion about his paintings, she eventually becomes his assistant and poses for him.
Her sister. Her sister Agnes dies after a quarantine is placed in her part of town.
Maria Thins. Maria Thins is the mother of Catharina, Griet's mistress. She is always very interested in Vermeer's paintings and keeps an eye on the goings on of the household.
Griet's brother. Frans is Griet's younger brother, he works as an apprentice tile maker. He eventually leaves the factory and goes to Rotterdam.
Cornelia. Cornelia breaks Griet's treasured tile, because of her jealousy and for spite. In real life Vermeer fathered 11 children with his wife Catharina.
