Cooper, Jilly
Queen Augusta's Boarding School. This book begins at the Boarding school attended by Perdita Macleod. She is half way through her English exam and daydreaming about the Rutshire Cup, being played at the local Rutshire Polo Club.
Dancer Maitland. Seth Newcombe is the surgeon who finally sorts out Ricky’s elbow injury. Kevin Coley is a Patron who owns a pet food business. Simpson Hastings is an American journalist. Dancer Maitland is the lead singer of a band called Apocalypse and ends up becoming Ricky’s Patron.
Donaghue. Donaghue is an older hunter who is very steady. Ricky dare not try anything that might cause him any more pain.
Luke, Red and Bibi. Luke is Bart’s son from his first marriage. Red and Bibi are from his second marriage to Grace. He doesn't have any children with Chessie.
Snow Cottage. Robinsgrove is where Ricky lives. Brock House is the house Daisy originally lived in when she first moved to Rutshire. Prospect Farm is where my sister lives!
Angel. After Angel helped Bibi to land the helicopter, Bart asked him if he would take Bibi to the ball. Her boyfriend, Skipper, had stood her up.
Red is Bibi's Brother and Ricky is Chessie's ex-husband.
Dominic Carlisle. During the Polo match, in which Angel tries to kill Drew, Daisy gets very upset and ends up snapping her sunglasses in an attempt not to cry. Dommie is sitting next to her and realises what’s going on so takes her away before she gives the game away to Sukey.
Fantasma. When the Umberto woke up and saw Matilda alive he shouted "Fantasma! Aparecido!" He had left her for dead the night before and thought she was a ghost. Perdita remarked that Fantasma was a much nicer name so it was changed.
Rupert Campbell-Black. Jackie Cosgrave is an artist of very questionable reputation who used to host orgies. Daisy was lured to one when she was quite young and ended up pregnant; it later comes out that Rupert was the Father.
Lady Godiva. Perdita doesn't feel she can compete with the amount of money the other women are spending on clothes, so she gets very drunk and goes dressed, or rather undressed, as Lady Godiva.
He goes to 10. Chessie told Ricky that if he achieved the three goals she set for him, she would leave Bart and go back to him. During the celebration of them winning the Westchester, they make an announcement that Ricky is going to be made up to a 10-goal player, the first British player to do so since the war.
He wants to see Daisy. When the competition is over Ricky realises how much he misses Daisy and wants to see her. He flies home as soon as he can to tell her how he feels. He finds her in a bit of a state.
Gives her a cheque for £100,000. Perdita was very depressed during the time leading up to her birthday. Rupert was going to throw her a big party, but she wasn't really in the right mood. At her mother's wedding Rupert sat in the car with her and gave her the cheque and told her to go for it with Luke.
Buys Fantasma. She makes a deal with Alejandro before the match. When Luke thinks he has been double crossed he is very upset. Perdita then rides out to meet him in the Pampas and tells him that she brought Fantasma for him with the money that Rupert gave her.
Sleeping. Jake is the first character we meet in 'Riders', and one of the most important within this story.
Africa. At the end of the book, Africa has had a foal who is showing great promise as a showjumper too!

Satan. After Rupert buys Satan, he changes his name to Macauley in honour of Helen, as it is her surname.
Revenge. Rupert, in a fit of jealousy, persuades Captain Carter, Revenge's owner, to sell the horse to Rupert without telling Jake.
When Jake takes Helen out for lunch following Marcus' operation. Jake and Rupert are sworn enemies, dating back to their time at prep school, so he would not have introduced Jake to Helen at a party. Jake did not go to the Colombian Olympics because Rupert had bought Revenge, Jake's only horse, and at the Aga Khan, Helen was wearing the spotted handkerchief Jake sent her when drunk, indicating that he wanted to marry her.
Helen and Jake. The 1984 Olympics actually were held in Los Angeles, although Great Britain, sadly, did not really win a team gold medal!
Kevin Coley. Janey left Billy for Kevin, but did eventually come back to him, and became pregnant soon after. Driffid, a member of the British team made the mistake of asking Billy who the father was, Billy or Kevin?, and Billy punched him across a tent!

Love. Throughout the book Jake uses his gypsy recipes to great effect in curing ill horses.
Rutshire. Rutshire is a fictional county in which the majority of Jilly's novels are set; it seems to be located near Gloucester and Somerset, from the places which are featured.
Corinium. There is a Corinium Museum located in Cirencester which focuses on the Romans and their lives in and around the town.
Mousie. Everyone is horrified whenever Valerie insists that they call her by this pet name, and Sarah Stratton and Lizzie Vereker have great trouble not laughing out loud the first time she does this!
Declan O'Hara. Declan is a very famous TV personalty who has his own talk show. He has a wife called Maud and three children.
Gertrude. When Rupert insults Gertrude's appearance, Taggie is most upset, and it takes Rupert a long time to win her over.

Tony Baddingham. Tony discovers that Cameron is seeing Rupert after Rupert's dog ruins the Cornium coverage of Valerie's garden. He beats her up badly, and this results in Cameron moving in with Rupert and publicly joining Venturer.

Venturer. Venturer means one who enters into a risky situation, or one who gambles with the future.
James Vereker is Corinium's local news and interest presenter. He is very self obsessed and drives his lovely wife into an affair. Who is his wife, and who is her lover? | Jilly Cooper 'Rivals'

Lizzy and Freddie Jones. Lizzy has an unpleasant husband and Freddie has a very unlikeable, social climbing wife, and the two embark on an affair which leaves both of them very happy. In future books we find out that they have married.
Venturer. Happily, Venturer wins at the end of the book, despite Rupert's very explicit memoirs being published that week in 'The Scorpian' newspaper. Declan is so shaken when he is told that he has won, that everyone assumes to begin with that they have lost the bid.
