7. Cecilia (C.C.) Bloom and Roberta (Bertie) White met on the beach in Atlantic City. Bertie had been at the beach with her mother and Aunt Neet when she got lost. They became friends and would start to write letters to each through the years.
John Perry. C.C. went to Beach Haven when she was 19 years old to perform for the summer. She developed a crush on John Perry. Bertie came to visit and this was the first time they had seen each other since they met, nine years earlier. Bertie lost her virginity to John Perry and after she left Beach Haven, C.C. and John got married.
Michael Barron. Bertie wrote to C.C. that she wasn't sure she really wanted to marry Michael, but she did anyway. She described him as a 'cold fish'.
Nina. Bertie and Michael had tried throughout their marriage to have a baby. She didn't find out she was pregnant until after they had already separated. When Bertie told Michael, he said he would pay support, but he did not want to have anything to do with the baby. Bertie named the baby Nina Rose Barron.
ovarian. Bertie only had a couple months left to live when C.C. came to stay with her. Bertie had decided to leave Florida and go to Carmel, California to die away from her friends and family. After C.C. was there for a while, she sent for Nina to come be with her mother.
Dr. Wechsler. While visiting a pregnant Bertie, C.C. met Dr. Wechsler and started to go out with him. She confided to Bertie that she thought maybe she was in love and could settle down and live the straight life with him. But when C.C. got a call from Allan Jackson, her former lover, she decided to go back to Hollywood and be with him.
David Malcolm. Bertie met David Malcolm at her tennis club. She was 35 and he was 27. They talked a lot on the phone and he invited her to visit him in California. Shortly after Bertie got to California, she found out that David had been killed in a plane crash on his way home from Chicago.
christmas tree. Bertie told C.C. that she was sad that she would not be alive at Christmas time. C.C. went out and bought a Christmas tree, even though it was only July.
public school. At the beginning of the book, C.C. is going to send Nina to boarding school because of the lawyer's recommendation. Once she drops her off though, she has second thoughts and goes back to get her. C.C. looks around at a lot of private schools, but feels none of them are right. She ends up sending Nina to the public school in their neighborhood, where Nina wanted to go all along.
Kevin. Kevin is a boy who lives in their neighborhood. He has cerebral palsy.
No. They get back together for a while, but eventually C.C. finds out he is just using her to get into show business. They break up and he goes back to his wife and family in Ohio.
Michael. C.C. spots Michael Barron on the beach. She is surprised to see that he is remarried and has two children. When she talks to him, she asks that he finally meet Nina and he agrees. But the next morning when Nina goes to meet him, he does not show up.
She gives it to Aunt Anita. Aunt Anita is complaining that her sister Rosie, Nina's grandmother, didn't leave her anything when she passed away. Nina shows her the ring that her mother left to her, and when Aunt Anita asks to try it on, she likes it so much, Nina hates to ask for it back. But when C.C. gets there and sees the ring on Anita's finger she demands that she give it back to Nina.
Disneyland. C.C's father was near death when she talked him into going to the hospital to have heart surgery. He and C.C. become close for the first time since she was a little girl. She loves finding out that he can sing and that she must have got some of her talent from him. C.C.'s father also enjoys doing things with Nina.
Nina's drug use. C.C. finds out that Nina has been using drugs and after they go to counseling, Nina runs away. After a couple of days, she calls C.C. because she has had a bad reaction to some drugs that she took. Nina has to go into detox and rehabilitation.
emerald ring. Nina sells the emerald ring her mother left her to a girl at school to get money to buy drugs.
No. She was nominated, but did not win. She didn't even go to the ceremony because it was family night at the rehab center where Nina was staying.
C.C.. C.C. finally adopts Nina. She had always wanted to, but was afraid that Nina would not want her to. When she finds out that Nina has always hoped to be adopted by C.C., they go to court to make it legal. Thanks for taking this quiz.
