Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Eliot, George
You know it's coming, so let's just get it over with. George Eliot is the pen name. What's the author's real name? | 'Middlemarch' Quiz
|
Mary Ann Evans . She was born Mary Ann Evans and married John Cross about seven months before her death.
Lydgate. Poor Lydgate...he had such ambition. But he was a sucker for a pretty face.
At the beginning of the novel, Dorothea has two suitors. What are their names? | 'Middlemarch' Quiz
|
Casaubon and Chettam. Sir James Chettam turns his attentions to Celia after Dorothea becomes engaged to Casaubon, and they eventually marry.
Mr. Brook buys one of the town's newspapers. What is the name of the paper? | 'Middlemarch' Quiz
|
the Pioneer. He uses it to try to aid his political career. (It doesn't help!)
Rome. Casaubon spends most of his time in the Vatican library. The honeymoon was not a great success.
While on their honeymoon an artist asks to use Dorothea's husband as a model for his painting of whom? | 'Middlemarch' Quiz
|
St. Thomas Aquinas. The artist didn't really want to paint Casaubon at all...he just used this as an excuse to paint {Dorothea;} he was fascinated by her beauty.
Tipton. Freshitt was Chettam's estate, and Lowick belonged to Casaubon. Stone Court was Featherstone's.
second cousin. Will Ladislaw's grandmother Julia was the sister of Casaubon's mother.
Although Dorothea abhors 'trinkets,' she does decide to keep one set of her mother's jewelry before turning the rest over to Celia. What kind of gems are they? | 'Middlemarch' Quiz
|
emeralds. 'They look like fragments of heaven.'
Mr. Bustrode had quite a murky past. His past evil dealings affected one of the main characters greatly. Which one? | 'Middlemarch' Quiz
|
Will Ladislaw. He basically stole Will's family's inheritance. Will grew up in poverty and was then dependent upon Casaubon for support. He was, thus, considered to be on a lower rung class-wise.
Will Ladislaw. This was a big, surprising blow to Rosamond's ego. She couldn't imagine any man rejecting her. But Will told her that no other woman existed for him but Dorothea. (Sigh)
tear up a will. Mary didn't want to do anything that would lay her open to suspicion. The refusal to tear up the will may have cost Fred a large inheritance, but as Mary thought, he was probably better off without it.
Mr. Rigg. Rigg, Featherstone's illegitimate son, doesn't have any interest in the property, so he sells it to Mr. Bulstrode.
Rosamond. It's hard to imagine two people more different.
Before he died, what promise did Casaubon tell Dorthea he wanted her to make to him? | 'Middlemarch' Quiz
|
none of the "above". Casaubon wanted Dorothea to acquiesce without telling her what the promise was beforehand. What a manipulative creep! Dorothea knows it's wrong of him to ask, but she finally decides to agree because she can't stand to cause him more pain.
Mr. Farebrother. Mr. Farebrother loved Mary, but she had always loved Fred. Dr. Lydgate did love Rosamond, though it wasn't a very satisfactory union for either of them. And Will, of course he got his Dorothea.
Mr. Raffles. Though one might consider both Featherstone and Rosamond to be 'passive-aggressive'-type blackmailers, Raffles is the one who threatens for financial gain (by exposing Bulstrode's past).
True or True: Is this the last line of the book...'for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts, and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life and rest in unvisited tombs'? (The answer is True!) | 'Middlemarch' Quiz
|
True . Dorothea never accomplished the great philanthropic acts that she had hoped, but her life positively affected those around her. I just put this question in because I wanted to use that line -- I think it's beautiful.
