The intelligence supplied by MI6 was incorrect.. MI6 was the British intelligence agency. They estimated the number of men guarding the exchange to be around twelve. Also they assumed that the Gestapo personnel employed at the exchange would be unarmed. However they were wrong on both accounts leading to the failure of the attack.
His left ear had been wounded by a bullet and only the lobe remained.. Paul was an American who had been injured in a shootout with the Gestapo. His right kneecap had also been wounded and hence he was forced to retire from the army. He was in charge of the Jackdaws mission.
Flick Clairet. Major Flick Clairet was a senior agent in the Special Operations Executive (SOE) responsible for sabotage. She was the only one to survive undercover in France for more than two years. She would be an invaluable source of information to the Germans if captured alive, as she knew most of the Resistance circuits operating in France.
She was untrustworthy and gave away secrets regarding the mission.. Denise was the sister of the Marquess of Inverlocky. She failed a test set by Paul and ended up telling a policeman at a bar all about their plans to blow up the railway tunnel at Marles. Simon Fortescue of the MI6 tried forcing Flick to take her with them to France but she was too much of a security risk to the rest of the team.
Jelly. Jelly was a safebreaker and the oldest member of the Jackdaws.

A half-completed crossword torn from the Daily Mirror.. Before boarding the plane to France, the Jackdaws were searched to see if they carried anything that would gave away the fact that they were Allied agents. The box of matches was found in Maude’s suitcase while Jelly carried the playing cards.
She wore odd shoes, brown and black.. She met the Allied agents at the crypt in the cathedral at three o’clock in the afternoon. The agent would approach her and say, “Pray for me” to which she would reply, “I pray for peace”.
Monet. Bourgeoise was Mademoiselle Lemas’ codename while Helicopter was the codename of Brian Standish, a radio operator. Dieter Franck gave his codename as Charenton when he was trying to convince Helicopter he was a member of the Resistance.
The potato field to the east of Laroque.. The field was located 5 kilometers from Laroque in the village of L’Epine. A plane was supposed to pick up the Jackdaws from there and take them back to England.

England. Although the novel does take place in both France and the Middle East, it is set mainly in England.
William. William's wedding plans are foiled when his bride-to-be cancels the wedding. Tom demands payment for the completed house which makes an enemy of Lord William Hamleigh.
Giving birth. Tom and his family travelled for weeks on the road as he searched for work. His wife Agnes was pregnant with their third child, but after giving birth, she died from loss of blood and her weak condition.
Ellen. Ellen, who lives in the woods with her son Jack, was thought to be a witch by those who knew her. So, despite being a single woman with a young son living in the woods, she was left alone. Tom will meet Ellen again and she will travel with him as he looks for work.

Kingsbridge. Philip becomes the prior, or ruler, of Kingsbridge monastery after the death of Prior James. His election was challenged by Brother Remegius, who believed that he would be elected once James was dead. Remegius will make trouble for Prior Philip.
Waleran Bigod. Waleran Bigod is anything but a man of God. He schemes with William to do everything in his power to enrich himself and to gain power in the Church.

Jack. Alienna and her brother Richard were made homeless after the Earl's castle fell. She was raped by William, made to watch as her brother's earlobe was cut off, and was forced to go on the run. Her father was imprisoned and died.
Walter. Walter does whatever William tells him to do and is forever helping to protect him in times of need. He disappears half way through the novel.
Jack. Jack Jackson, son of Ellen, is tired of travelling with Tom, his mother, and Tom's family, so he sets fire to the cathedral in hopes that Tom will land a permanent job there, rebuilding the cathedral.
He is kicked in the head by William's war horse.. William leads a band of knights to terrorize the town of Kingsbridge because he is angry that Alienna is now a successful wool merchant there. Tom stands in his way and is kicked by William's war horse. He never regains consciousness. Alienna's shop is burned to the ground.
Hell. William is deathly afraid of going to hell when he dies. So, after every evil act he commits, he seeks absolution from Bishop Walleran Bigod.
Jongleur. Jack, Ellen's husband, was hanged for a crime he did not commit. Three men, one priest, one knight, and one abbot, all frame him for stealing a chalice. Jack was a jongleur, a wandering poet/storyteller/minstrel.
He took part in the murder of Archbishop of Canterbury.. Alienna watches with satisfaction as her evil nemesis, Lord William Hanleigh, is hanged for his part in the murder of Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Beckett. William dies simpering, only a shell of the once proud evil lord.

a letter. After killing the two men-at-arms chasing him, Sir Thomas had Merthin bury a letter for him. His arm was slashed in the fight, so Merthin did the digging for him. Merthin was told the letter contained a dangerous secret and that whenever Merthin hears that Thomas has died, he is to dig it up and give it to a priest.
Earl Roland. Ralph wanted nothing more than to be a knight. He found his chance in the bridge collapse. He saw the earl in the water and swam out to him, while fighting off other people who needed saving. He cut the earl loose from his horse and swam him to shore. He made sure everyone knew he was the one who saved Roland's life, but he still didn't get made a knight!
Wulfric. Gwenda worshipped the handsome Wulfric and wanted to be married to him. He was in love with Annet and only had eyes for her. When the bridge collapsed and his parents and brother were killed, he lost everything and became a landless laborer. Annet promptly dumped him and married another man. It took time and a lot of work, but Gwenda eventually won Wulfric over.
Ralph. Gwenda believed that Ralph was Sam's father. Ralph used sex with Gwenda as a bribe so that Wulfric would get his family's land back. When Sam was born, she was married to Wulfric so all assumed he was the father. Ralph found out the truth near the end of his life. Gwenda told him when it was the only way to stop Sam from being killed.
Thurstan. Griselda seduced Merthin so that all would believe he was the one who got her pregnant. She was actually already with child by her lover, Thurstan, who ran off when he found out she was expecting. Griselda's father, Elfric, tried to force Merthin to marry, but he refused when he found out the truth. When she did have the baby, she named him Merthin. He grew up to look just like Thurstan, not Merthin and everyone called the boy, Merthin Bastard.
Merthin. Philippa was estranged from Ralph and living in the convent at Kingsbridge. She had a long affair with Merthin and conceived even though they assumed she was too old. She then had to go back to Ralph since the penalty of adultery would be death for her. Ralph, of course, assumed the boy was his and raised him as his own and never found out the truth. They never told Roland who his true father was either.
2. The first was for the rape of Annet; he escaped the courthouse with help from Earl Roland. The second was for his outlaw activites of robbery and murder. He was pardoned and sent off to the war with France.
