Indiana. They went to grammar school and high school together. Both were also accepted to college in Indiana. After graduation Rachel headed for New York City to complete her law degree and Darcy followed her, finding a glamorous job in a public relations firm.
through Rachel. Rachel and Dex were law students together and became close friends and study partners. Rachel always thought that Dexter was very attractive but somewhat out of her league so she decided to introduce Dex to Darcy. Darcy knew immediately upon meeting him that he was Mr. Right - handsome, intelligent and available.

Rachel's 30th birthday. Darcy threw Rachel a 30th birthday party at a bar but as the night wore on, Darcy got increasingly more intoxicated so Dex put her in a cab and sent her home. Dex convinced Rachel to stay out for another few drinks to celebrate her birthday and the conversation shifted from friendly chatter to flirtatious banter. Soon, the two headed back to Rachel's apartment and made love passionately.
Marcus. Darcy called Rachel the next morning when Dex did not come home, and Rachel played dumb to his whereabouts. Dex devised a plan to tell Darcy that he and Marcus stayed out for the night and he crashed at Marcus's apartment. Darcy believed him, mostly because she could not conceive of the idea that Dex would cheat on her.
The differences between Darcy and Rachel were very apparent. Darcy led a charmed life - she was tall, beautiful and got everything she wanted. Rachel was always second fiddle to her but as Rachel's attraction to Dex grew, she started to look back on her years of friendship with Darcy. Notre Dame. Rachel was the smart one - she always achieved top honors in school and what she lacked in beauty, she made up for in intelligence. When the girls were applying for colleges, Rachel was not accepted into Notre Dame which broke her heart. Darcy claimed that she was, even though she had scored a lower SAT score than Rachel. Rachel foolishly believed her but Darcy, claiming that she couldn't bear to go to a school that would reject her best friend, decided to attend Indiana University.
Darcy always felt she needed to one-up Rachel and although Rachel knew how Darcy was, she let herself be a victim of it.
It was obvious that Dexter and Rachel's affair wasn't a one-night stand - they truly had feeling for each other. While Darcy and friends vacationed in the Hamptons, Dexter and Rachel stayed behind in the city to be together. What holiday was it? | "Something Borrowed" by Emily Giffin

Independence Day. Darcy, Dex, Rachel, Claire and Marcus all rented a house in the Hamptons for the summer. Darcy tried hard to get Rachel and Marcus together romantically but Rachel seemed to rebuff his advances. While they were all in the Hamptons during the long holiday weekend, Rachel and Dex spent time together and Rachel admitted that it was the happiest time of her life.
It was apparent that Dex and Rachel were in love but Dex and Darcy's engagement made it very difficult to visualize a future together. Rachel was afraid to ask Dex to leave Darcy and didn't want to ruin their friendship, but at the same time loved him and wanted to be with him. Weeks after agonizing over their future, Rachel gave Dex an ultimatum - break off the engagement or break up with Rachel.
Ethan. Ethan and Rachel became friends in grammar school when Ethan moved to Indiana from Long Island, New York. He was an intellect like Rachel and Rachel had a secret crush on him when she was a girl. They were just great friends, but while she visited with Ethan, he admitted that he had a crush on her too.
Rachel confided in Ethan about her relationship with Dex and her betrayal of Darcy. Ethan told Rachel that she should fight for what she wants, or move on. Rachel enjoyed her time with Ethan, where she explored the city, met his friends and most importantly, started to mend her broken heart.
Dex. Dexter was a mess and told her that he couldn't think of anything but her while she was gone. He told her that he broke his engagement to Darcy that day and he wanted to be with her. Rachel was overcome with happiness and the two were passionately reunited. However, their reunion was short lived when Darcy showed up moments later to speak with Rachel.
she is pregnant with Marcus's child. Darcy had been seeing Marcus behind Dexter's back for weeks and Rachel knew about it, but didn't tell anyone. But when Darcy also confessed that she was pregnant with Marcus's child, Rachel couldn't believe it. Darcy begged Rachel for forgiveness because she thought that Rachel liked Marcus. Little did she know that Rachel and Dex had been falling in love for months.
Dex's wristwatch. Darcy had confessed to her indiscretion with Marcus but Rachel never revealed her affair with Dexter. Darcy saw Dex's wristwatch that she had bought him, on Rachel's dresser. She started to search Rachel's apartment and opened her closet, where Dexter had been hiding. Dexter calmly walked out of the closet and got dressed as Darcy screamed at both of them about their betrayal. Darcy's last words to Rachel were "You are dead to me".
Rachel was shaken by her encounter with Darcy and felt terrible about her betrayal but also realized that her life was about to begin a new chapter of happiness with Dexter.

she is pregnant with his child. It is revealed at the end of "Something Borrowed" that Darcy has been cheating on Dexter for months and is pregnant with Marcus's child. Even though she is just as much at fault for the failure of her relationship with Dexter, she takes no personal responsibility. She feels Rachel and Dexter truly betrayed her and decides to throw herself into a relationship with Marcus. She wants to start a new life with him and their baby.
couch. Darcy wants to start fresh and buy herself some new furniture, including a beautiful kitchen table and chairs, but she spots Rachel and Dexter looking at a new couch together. It dawns on Darcy that the two aren't just having a fling, they are actually in love and possibly living together. This devastates her and she looks to Marcus for comfort and sympathy, but he gives very little. He is more interested in spending time in bed with Darcy than offering emotional support.
After weeks together, Marcus finally tells Darcy that he doesn't want to be with her and doesn't want to be a father to their child. He offers financial support for the baby but wants no part of its life. For the first time in her life, Darcy is alone and unwanted.
London. She needs to start fresh and what better way to do it than by moving? She convinces her high school friend Ethan to let her visit him for a few weeks. Little does he know, she plans to stay permanently but does not tell him that initially, for fear that he won't let her come.
Darcy takes a leave of absence from her job, sublets her apartment, packs all her clothes in her Louis Vuitton suitcases, and sets off for England. Ethan seems less than thrilled with Darcy's arrival, mostly because she is high maintenance, whiny and takes up too much room in his tiny apartment.
shopping. Museums bore her and the weather is rainy most of the time. Ethan is working hard on writing his book and doesn't spend much time with her so to entertain herself, she shops. She hits all of the high-fashion stores in and around London and soon depletes her savings account.
a red-head. After the three start talking and Darcy tells them that she is pregnant, they want to introduce her to some eligible men. They have someone in mind who has red hair but is very attractive and successful. Darcy agrees that a new man is exactly what she could use and accepts their invitation to a dinner party where maybe she will meet her new Mr. Right.
Geoffrey Moore. Dr. Moore has a gentle way with Darcy but when he tells her that she is having twin boys, she immediately leaves the office, too much in shock to stay and ask questions. Days later when she arrives at the dinner party that Meg and Charlotte are hosting, Dr. Moore is a guest. Not realizing that Darcy is trying to keep the news about expecting twins a secret, Dr. Moore announces it to the guests. Darcy is horrified at first but then calms down, realizing that he is just excited for her. A romance blooms between the two over within a few weeks and he refers Darcy to another physician colleague.
receiving blankets. Rachel sends Darcy a letter telling her how much she misses her and extends her best wishes to Darcy on her impending motherhood. Rachel includes matching receiving blankets each trimmed with blue silk ribbon for the babies. Darcy is truly touched by the gifts and realizes that she needs to make peace with Rachel and accept some of the blame over what happened months ago.
her mother. Darcy and her mother had a falling out shortly before she left for England because her family didn't approve of Marcus or her pregnancy. But after having the babies, she finds that she wants to speak to her mom. Although there is definitely tension in their conversation, Darcy's mom tells her how proud she is of her and how much she loves her.
Darcy also decides to call Rachel and the two speak for a short time. They start to mend their broken relationship and Rachel confesses to Darcy that she and Dexter are now married. Although the news is difficult to hear, Darcy can now find closure of the past.
Darcy names the boys John and Thomas, and Ethan himself feels like the proud father. Soon Darcy and Ethan profess their love for each and start a new chapter in their lives together.
Julia. Two years after giving birth to the twins, Darcy marries Ethan in a quiet ceremony in London. Darcy has mended her friendship with Rachel, but they will never be as close as they once were. Rachel and Dexter are guests at the wedding and now have a young daughter. As her "something blue" for the wedding, Darcy uses the blue ribbons from the receiving blankets Rachel gave her as part of her bouquet. At the reception, Rachel toasts the new bride and groom and talks about the joys of love and friendship.
