The Japan Coastal Seafood Company. The character of Mr. Tanaka is quite cruel. He sells Chiyo so that she can become a geisha, but her sister's fate is much worse.
Hatsumomo. You are not told exactly what becomes of Hatsumomo after she is evicted from the okiya, but she was such a nasty piece of work that it's quite hard to feel sorry for her.
Sayuri. When she is later adopted by the 'mother' of her Okiya her name is further changed, she goes from being Sakamoto Chiyo to Nitta Sayuri.
Dr. Crab. This part of the book seemed awful to me, but was very well, and tastefully, written.
A Ruby. Mameha tells Chiyo to give the ruby to her 'mother' this shows how well she is doing as a Geisha.
f. She has only had three abortions, but she has three little statues representing them, so she still remembers, and feels guilty about them.
General Tottori. The Chairman becomes Chiyo's danna at the end of the book, she twice refuses offers from Nobu, and the Baron is Mameha's danna.
Korin. Izuko is the Geisha with the Chairman when Chiyo first meets him, Satsu is Chiyo's real sister and Hatsumiyo is Pumpkin's Geisha name.
Arashino. The part of the book set after the war is quite sad and depressing, so much has changed, the way of life which the Geisha's knew and were used to was gone forever and much of the exotic traditions were lost.
New York. The book ended well on the whole, but it seemed as though the happiest years of Chiyo's life, when she was the Chairman's danna, were slightly rushed over, just for the sake of finishing the book.
Chiyo Sakamoto. The main character was born Chiyo Sakamoto, and then her name was changed to Nitta Sayuri when she became an apprenitce geisha. "Nitta" for the Okiya she lived in, and "Sayuri" was the name Mameha gave her.
tipsy house. Sayuri called her house a tipsy house because of the peculiar way it leaned to one side.
Satsu. Satsu Sakamoto was Sayuri's biological sister who she was separated from when she was only 9 years old.
Mr. Tanaka. Mr. Tanaka Ichiro was the owner of the Japan Coastal Seafood Company. Sayuri looked up to, respected him,...and trusted him.
Gion. The town where Sayuri ended up living and becomming a geisha was Gion. This is where the most beautiful and elaborate geisha live.
Yes. She was finally asked by Mother to be adopted, but only after Mother learned how much money Sayuri would be worth.
Dr. Crab and The Baron. Although Mameha set it up so that Mr. Nobu and Dr. Crab would compete for Sayuri's mizuage, it turned out that The Baron was quite taken with Sayuri. It was The Baron and Dr. Crab who bid back and forth making Sayuri's mizuage the highest priced mizuage in Gion.
The Baron. Mameha's danna is the Baron, who is a very rich and powerful man.
The Ichiriki. The Ichiriki teahouse is mentioned numerous times in the book as a place where Sayuri and Mameha entertained often.
The Chairman. In the end The Chairman became Sayuri's danna. She had always loved The Chairman, but because Nobu had such strong feelings for Sayuri The Chairman never seemed to show much interest in her.
Sakamoto. Sakamoto Chiyo was the name that was given to her at birth, but her first name was changed by Mameha when she became an apprentice geisha. Her last name was changed to Nitta when Mother adopted her.
Sa. Mameha went to the fortune teller in order to decide what to call Chiyo.
Hatsumiyo. While this was her new name, everyone called her Pumpkin because of her oval face. This name was given to her by Chiyo. Hatsumomo was her older sister; therefore, the beginning of her new name was "Hatsu".
Mr. Lizard. She always had an inappropriate name for people that did not match her beauty, Mr. Lizard was one of them.
shades of green, with a vine that had red leaves. Chiyo was forced to spread ink all over the magnificent kimono as a terrible joke from Hatsumomo.
Little Miss Stupid. She often called Chiyo Little Miss Stupid as a sign of distaste for the younger girl.
brooch. While she was said to have stolen the brooch, in all truth, Hatsumomo set her up.
from the roof. She tried to escape from the roof but ended up falling and breaking her arm.
Tatsuyo. Chiyo's sister was sent to the jorou-ya Tatsuyo. A jorou-ya is a place of prostitution.
fourteen. Sayuri was fourteen when she was introduced as an apprentice geisha, and she was such until she turned eighteen, then she would be a true geisha.
Eishin-an. Eishin-an means "Prosperous Truth Retreat."
