Doc Daneeka. Doc Daneeka explains this to Yossarian when Yossarian asks to be grounded. In order to be grounded, the person must be crazy. But a crazy person wouldn't ask to be grounded. This is how Colonel Cathcart keeps his men in the Air Force.

Snowden. This is the famous scene in literature in which Snowden "spills his guts." When Yossarian sees him lying there with his insides spilling out, he sees that man is mortal. He realizes that men are expendable and decides that he must escape the war by any means possible.
Major Danby. Major Danby only wants to get his job done and do what is best for his country. He doesn't get in Yossarian's way when he decides to escape to Sweden, and even gives him money to help him on his way.
