Butler. Very proud about his job.
Mr Farraday. He's a nice, generous, American 'gentleman', in every sense of the word.
Anthony Hopkins. In the film, Farraday was played by Christopher Reeve,(Superman) if I remember rightly. The film did cut some of the more important aspects out of the book in my opinion.
Evening. Stevens only realises this right at the end of the novel.
Miss Kenton. Technically, she is Mrs Benn, but Stevens can not accept this and refers to her for the most part as 'Miss Kenton'

Someone very skilled in the Secret Arts. A Geomancer is someone very skilled in the Secret Arts and able to draw on the many forces that shape the world.
Lyrinx. The Lyrinx were intelligent, usually winged creatures from the void. They were larger and stronger than the Aachim. They were also quite fond of eating the Aachim.
An Artisan from the manufactory. Tiaan was a skilled artisan who worked in the manufactory but she was sent to the breeding factory as punishment and escaped from there.
Crystals. The crystals were very valuable to the Aachim in the war against the Lyrinx and could be used to power clankers (war machines).
The breeding factory. Marnie lived in the breeding factory and produced 15 children, one of whom was Triaan. The breeding factory was considered very important by the authorities due to the large number of casualties during the war. Females were only rarely sent to the front line.
A roof fall in the mine. Joeyn died as a result of a roof fall in the mine trying to get a particularly powerful crystal for Triaan.
A war machine. Clankers were manned war machines powered by crystals. They were made at the manufactory and the weapons they carried were rock throwing catapults and spear throwers known as javelards.
An ancient city. Tirthrax was an ancient city built by the Aachim entirely inside Mt Tirthrax in the Great Mountains.
Ullii. Ullii was so sensitive to sound, touch and sight that the only way she could exist with other beings was to wear ear plugs, goggles and under-garments made of spider silk to prevent anything coming in contact with her skin. Normal conversation, ordinary light or clothing caused her great discomfort.
Ryll. Only the Lyrinx could "flesh-form". The wingless Lyrinx known as Ryll was particularly good at it.

15 years old. She is a very sweet girl also.
| Efrain was also another character in the novel. He was very young also, but older than Maria. How old was he? | "Maria" Quiz

20 years old. Efrain had such a deep love for Maria, he picked her flowers and was very sweet to her, even thought he was her cousin. Efrain studied medicine in Europe, and when he got home from his studies... he got a "surprise", a sad, very sad surprise (explained later).
Efrain's sister. Maria and Emma were very good friends.
Jorge and Manuela. They adopted Maria, since both her parents died.
her parents died. Efrain's parents do not want Efrain to marry Maria, but he loves her so much, he tries to do the impossible.
Sara and Salomon. They died when Maria was still young. Lucky for her, she has Efrain's parents.
Epilepsy. She died, just like her mother. Maria was already dead when Efrain got home, you can all imagine his sadness, but the author does not tell us what happens after. He lets you imagine, or guess, what could happen.
