Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Cooper Main feels that the south should be looking to the future and developing industry, rather than concentrating on their past. Cooper is one of the main characters in the "North and South" trilogy, yet he doesn't appear at all in the TV mini-series.
Star Of Carolina. Cooper borrows almost two million dollars from George Hazard to build the "Star Of Carolina". However, due to the war, the ship is never completed.
Grady. Virgilia is an abolitionist who disapproves of the Mains and their way of life. The character is wonderfully portrayed in the TV series by Kirstie Alley.
Billy Hazard and Brett Main. At first Billy is interested in Brett's sister, Ashton, but after discovering her true character he realizes he prefers Brett.
