Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Jingo
Yes. This meant that while Goriff's place may be robbed etc., it wouldn't be by a member of the Thieves Guild.
Nobby Nobbs. Nobby Nobbs had so far never been promoted any further up.
Blue. Rust had a highly infuriating personality, and if anything happened that he believed couldn't possibly happen (for example his orders being disobeyed by a mere sergeant) he would simply erase the cause of the problem from his mind.
Two dollars. Apparently this was because if he didn't wear the sack, and someone saw him, they would have the feeling that they were upside down for the rest of the day.
Sheer Street. He told Vimes this in case he wanted to get a hurdle. As Vetinari was accused of treason, if he was going to executed he would have to be dragged along on a hurdle.
Vetinari: "Oh yes, I don't have to be dragged on a hurdle, do I?"
Carrot: "Only if you're actually executed, my lord. Traditionally, traitors are dragged to their place of execution on a hurdle. And then you're hung, drawn and quartered. I know about the hanging and quartering but I'm not sure how you're drawn, sir."
Les. Les seemed to have a lot more sense than his father.
Vetinari. Vetinari: "Treason is very nearly the ultimate crime, Sir Samuel. I think I should demand handcuffs."
Wols. The "Hagats" and "Ginra" currencies do not exist, a "rhinu" is from the Agatean Empire, and "wols" are, indeed, from Klatch.
Where in Klatch does the Prince gather his forces? | Jingo
|
Gebra. Found out by none other than corporal Nobbs acting undercover... James Bond he's not! He is told this by the ladies he meets at the well, who taking him to be one of them confide in him. Probably the only time in his life Nobby's been surrounded by women and none of whom are throwing up.
What is the name of the man that is set up as the fall guy assassin? | Jingo
|
Ossie Brunt. Poor guy, really thought he was going to assasinate the prince with his sad little bow. Very clever, I wonder if Lee Harvey Oswald thought of that.
What is the name of Mr. Goriff's kebab shop that is firebombed? | Jingo
|
Mundane Meals. Mr. Goriff had wanted a word that meant ordinary, everyday, straight-forward, and had asked around until he found one he liked the sound of. Beats McDonalds I guess.
In the book we see Ankh Morpork going to war with one of its neighbours. Do you know which one? | Jingo
|
Klatch. Those Towel headed, curry eating, sons of the desert. The ease with which the population turns bloodthirsty, is frightening and not a little reminiscent of the recent past.
What is the name of the island that appears at the beginning of the book? | Jingo
|
Leshp. This island was discovered by Solid Jackson or Greasy Arif depending on your point of view. What a brilliant idea, an island that rises out of the sea periodically due to a build up of natural gas.
What name does Nobby use when he is going "undercover" to find out who attempted to kill Prince Khufurah? | Jingo
|
Cecil. Nobby uses the name Cecil and Colon uses the name Frederick. Samuel is Commander Vimes's first name, and Leonard is, of course, Leonard of Quirm.
Where did the Assassin's Guild originate? | Jingo
|
Klatch. On the Discworld, the word "Assasin" and the Guild originated in Klatch. Ankh-Morpork has the largest branch of the Guild, but it didn't begin there. Genua had once been able to afford the largest branch of the Guild outside of Ankh-Morpork. Lancre is where Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and the other witches live.
Who does 71-hour Ahmed work for? (But betrays) | Jingo
|
Prince Cadram. 71-hour Ahmed got his name because he violated the hospitality rule of the D'regs by killing a man one hour before the three days of safety ended, thus, 71 out of 72 hours. He killed him for poisoning a village well, which killed everyone in the village. Ahmed couldn't wait even one hour to punish him for this, so he killed him, getting the name 71-hour Ahmed.
Who was it who helped Vimes get the last people out of the burning Klatchian embassy? | Jingo
|
71-hour Ahmed. 71-hour Ahmed is a Klatchian police officer. He knew about the plan to kill Khufurah, but wasn't able to stop it. However, since Khufurah didn't die, he managed to get him out of the embassy as it was burning, and had Vimes save the last woman there.
What happens to trolls when they go to a hot place? | Jingo
|
They get very stupid. Detritus is against going to Klatch because he doesn't want to be stupid. However, he is only stupid by day, as nights in Klatch are very cold, and cold makes trolls smarter.
Who is the nice prince of Klatch? (Really, not just public opinion) | Jingo
|
Prince Khufurah. Most politicians believe that Prince Cadram is a kind man, and his brother is awful. However, it is the other way around. Prince Cadram wanted his brother assasinated by Snowy Slopes, and wanted Ossie Brunt to take the blame. In the end of the book, Prince Khufurah becomes the ruling Prince, and his brother flees to Klatchistan.
What "special" qualities do Colon and Nobby have that make Vetinari choose them for his mission? | Jingo
|
They are stupid, yet loyal to a cause. In the Boat, Colon overhears Leonard ask Vetinari why he picked them. Vetinari answers, telling him that they are stupid but loyal. Colon, hearing this, doesn't realize that they are talking about him and Nobby, and is relieved that he isn't like those people they were talking about.
Who takes over Ankh-Morpork while Vetinari is not in power? | Jingo
|
Lord Rust. Lord Rust is a fool who believes he can run a more efficient city than Vetinari. He wants a war over Leshp, which he believes should belong to Ankh-Morpork. However, he has little knowledge of how difficult to control Commander Samuel Vimes and the Watch are, which leads to his loss of power.
What does Leonard of Quirm tell Colon that his boat is called? | Jingo
|
The Boat. Although it is indeed a submarine, he modeled it after a dolphin. However, he calls it the "Going-Under-The-Water-Safely-Device", or "the Boat" for short. Naming things is, alas, not one of his many talents.
In the end, what does Vetinari say he has to be dragged on to his hanging, if he is sentenced? | Jingo
|
A hurdle. Vetinari is amazed that the Watch has no shackles with which to bind him, as he is being charged with treason. He authorizes Vimes to get some as soon as possible. He is equally amazed that they don't have hurdles on which to drag people to their executions. He tells Vimes that there is a sports equipment store over on Sheer Street. Nobby goes to check, and tells Vimes that they have no hurdles, but they will sell them a Ping-Pong table for ten dollars.
