Johnstone, William W.
U. S. Army Special Ops, Hell Hounds. Under Col. Dean Ben served in what is called in the book the roughest, meanest group of killers in the Army.
Bold Strike . Col. Dean is already planning a group of highly select "Rebels" during his time in Vietnam. He sees that America is beginning to lean hard to the left and believes that a second revolution may be required to bring her back to center.
Writer. Writing pulp fiction becomes for Raines first a hobby, and then, after he discovers that he is truly good at it, his full-time job.
.45 Cal Thompson Sub-Machine Gun. While at several points Ben wishes he could find an old B.A.R., he has a long-standing hatred of the M-16A1. The "Chicago Piano" he picks up ends up in later books taking on almost as mystical an aura as Ben himself does.
Fran. Fran is a liberal, semi-racist old-money type, and while she and Ben do have a relationship for a while, they never really begin to like each other.
Hilton Logan. Hilton Logan later becomes the President of the restored United States government, and Ben's greatest nemesis. (Thomas Jefferson Johnson was Eddie Murphy's character in "The Distinguished Gentleman".)
Jeb Fargo. Sam Hartline is a mercenary, but he doesn't get introduced until the second book in the series, "Fire in the Ashes". Willie Washington is Kasim's real name. Cecil Jefferys is the black man that Ben meets immediately after leaving Chicago, who ends up first leading the "New Africa" movement, and later becoming Ben's second in command in the Tri-States.
Shaw A.F.B.. While the others are indeed military bases, Shaw A.F.B. is where Ben meets and kills a group of older officers, and incidentally learns more about the Rebels whom he has been, albeit unwilling, placed in charge of.

Lieutenant Conger. Ben argues with the poor Lieutenant that a Colonel has no authority to make him a General, but the Lieutenant, who is Colonel Dean's nephew, disagrees.
Malamute. Juno adopts Ben in a park, after Ben feeds him. Sadly, during the assault on the Tri-States Juno, now old and mostly blind, will be killed, but not before he rips the throat out of an invading Major.
KUNT. As Ike says "It's a little fuzzy around the edges man, but mighty fine, mighty fine." Ike will later become one of Ben's BattComms (that's Battalion Commander for the non-military types) as well as one of his best friends.
Doctor. Dr. Chase will become the head of the Tri-States hospital systems, as well as Ben's personal doctor.
Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. This is the area that will become the Tri-States.
Carl Raines. Yes, Ben's own brother tries to kill him. The fact that Ben kills his own brother causes the new government of the United States to leave the Tri-States alone for awhile.
Bubonic Plauge. Carried by fleas on the backs of mutated rats swarming out of Florida, this new form of the plague nearly wipes out the remaining population of the United States.
Sam Hartline . Sam Hartline, who will become one of Ben's greatest enemies throughout the first six book in the series, is one of the most brutal people I've ever read about. His methods would have made Hitler proud.
V.P. Lowry also orders the highest form of gun control possible, attempting to leave citizens with only pistols and .22 caliber rifles. What agency does he use for this program? | W.W. Johnstone's "Fire in the Ashes"

F.B.I.. Okay, so H.A.L.F.A.S.S. doesn't come in till later. (By the way, the whole name of that particular orginazation is: Help America Live, Fight, And Stay Safe.)
Prophet . Also called Nutsy by quite a few of Ben's troops, this man warns Ben that he will become a god in his troop's eyes, and that his dreams for a free America will not be realized within his lifetime.

Kipling. I can never remember exactly where this quote comes from, but its truth is timeless.
Cecil Jefferys. Until the plague strikes and Ben officially dissolves the U.S. government in it entirety, America finally has a black Vice President.
He is appointed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff. After the death of President Lowry in a double-cross by V.P. Lowry, the Joint Chiefs decide that Ben is the right man to run the country.
Human. The mutant child is nearly human except for its hands, feet, and jaw.
that his former buddies were alive and planning to overthrow the government. Ben thought that Bull Dean and Carl Adams were killed in battle, so he
didn't believe him. He was a writer at the time and had been visited
by the F B I for his outspoken views on the declining morals of America.
He was stung by a nest of yellowjackets. He was allergic to bee stings and went into a coma. Upon waking he found nothing but destruction,havoc and the silence of death.
He went home and got drunk. He did all of these selections at some point in the book but didn't have a plan of action. He just wanted to see what had become of the nation.
A Thompson Submachine Gun. He used all of these at one point or another but he used the "Tommy-Gun" for its intimidation factor.
New Africa. After the reformed U S government wiped out New Africa, Cecil and those who were left followed Ben to his newly formed nation. The two others were fictional places and the last is what all the survivors wanted.
In the Tri-states area. The Tri-states was named after the states of Idaho,Montana and Wyoming. The army on their travels across the nation, they take anything that isn't nailed down. The various groups of Rebels had the
codes that let them into all military installations and their underground caches.
As Ben travels back to his home,he meets Cecil and tells him that he is welcome to join him in the Tri-states if anything goes wrong. He also reunites with a women whom he tells that he is in love with. What

Salina. Salina is the mother of his two adopted children. Jerre is a young woman who he picks up outside Charlottesville,Virginia and falls in love with. She later follows him to the Tri-states. Tina is his adopted daughter. And in future books Rose becomes one of his battalion commanders.
Juno. Juno actually adopted Ben and they became inseperable. Juno lived with
Ben until a ripe old age.
After Ben and his followers reached the Tri-states, the reorganized central government led by a corrupt,weak and devious President Hilton

He told them they would be eliminated one by one. Ben unleashed his "Zero" squads to eliminate the members of President Logan's cabinet and Logan was eliminated by Ben's personal body guard,
