12. Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus met when he was investigating a rape at the Jewish yeshiva where Rina lived. She was a witness to the crime.
Sammy and Jake. Sammy and Jake are Rina's sons from her first marriage. She is a widow. The boys' Hebrew names are Shmueli and Yonkeleh.
Jan. Peter and Jan met when he was a young officer and she was protesting the Vietnam War. He arrested her and asked her to go out on a date with him. When Jan got pregnant, they decided to get married.
Cindy . Cindy is the only child from Peter's marriage to Jan.
Columbia. Cindy goes to college at Columbia in New York. Both Peter and Jan are worried about her being so far away from Los Angeles.
Marge. Peter and Marge were partners for many years. After he is promoted, Marge then partners with Scott Oliver. Marge always has trouble with relationships with men. She adopts a daughter who lived in a cult for years.
Hannah. Her full name is Hannah Rose Decker. After Hannah's birth, Rina had to have an emergency hysterectomy.
Janie Ingalls. This was Detective Milo Sturgis’s first unsolved case; shortly after he started investigating it he had been reassigned. Twenty years later Alex receives the book in the mail that has a crime scene photo in it. This bought back unpleasant memories for Milo and a new resolve to find out who did it.
Blue. The book was a three ring binder in blue leather. The words “The Murder Book” were centred on the front cover in gold letters; it contained photographs of 43 victims taken at crime scenes.

Sante Fe. Melinda had been with Janie at the party, but lost sight of her and ended up hitching a lift to another party at a beach. She never went back home and drifted around for ten years before getting it together. She had always wondered what had happened to Janie and hadn’t known she was dead until Milo told her.
Milo’s original partner on the Janie Ingalls case was Detective Schwinn who was forced into early retirement. Milo suspects that it was he who had sent Alex the book. When they traced him through his retirement cheques and went to visit him, his widow informed them that he had died 7 months earlier. A fall from a horse.. Pierce Schwinn had been forced to retire from the police force as he was a drug addict. After some hard times he met his second wife Marge and they were living happily on a horse farm until his death.
Ojai. Beverly Glen is where Alex and his partner Robin Castagna have custom built their new home, complete with a large fishpond and Japanese garden. Alex is finding it very lonely living there while Robin is on tour.

Paris. They had only been in Paris a couple of days when Robin announced she was going on the “Kill Famine” music tour for three months. This ruined their stay and Robin flew back alone to get ready for the tour.
Luthiery. Robin is a luthier who makes and repairs guitars and other stringed instruments. She was needed on the tour to oversee and repair the band's equipment.
Green. Alex uses the car as a means of getting to talk to Vance Coury, the owner of Concourse Auto Restorers and murder suspect. Alex suggests that Vance turn it into a convertible; Vance laughs at him and refuses to take it on. Later on the car has a homing device planted on it and that leads the bad guys to Alex.

Oil Painting. Nicholas had been away from Los Angeles for most of the last twenty years; he returned three years ago to nurse his sick mother. Alex and Milo’s interview with him was a major part in solving the case. His paintings sell for around $40,000.

Purple. His house is painted purple; he wears purple and crimson clothes and has a pinkie ring with a huge violet cabochon in it. He is the doctor of both Pierce and Marge Schwinn (he was the reason they met each other). Another patient of his, ex drug addict Willy Burns plays a major role in the case.
