High school biology. Codi really returns because her father, Doc Homer, has Alzheimer's and "his mind had begun to roam in alarming new pastures."
A war zone. Hallie heads to Nicaragua in the mid-80s to teach sustainable farming. Not the safest place, but Hallie is over-the-moon happy to to be "fighting" for a cause.
Nicholas. Codi read somewhere that the brain organizes information in sets no longer than four; she wonders if that is why everyone calls Nicolas "the baby." John Tucker, named after Emelina's late brother (who was named after a car!), is the oldest of J.T. and Emelina's five boys. Mason is the next youngest child. Viola is actually John Tucker's, Mason's and Nicholas's grandmother!
Her pregnancy and miscarriage at sixteen. While all those things actually happened or are happening, the only secret Codi carries is the fact that the four dates she and Loyd went on in high school resulted in Codi's miscarried pregnancy.
He died of puncture wounds and internal hemorrhaging.. Loyd and Leander were twins. Loyd explains to Codi that traditionally, twins were considered bad luck by the Pueblo people, and people in the pueblo called them "Twice as Bad." They were fifteen when Leander was killed in a bar fight.
Their river is dead.. Under the microscope, there is no microscopic life in the river. Upon testing, Codi finds the pH of the water is akin to battery acid. Turns out, the Black Mountain Mining Company is running sulphuric acid into the river in order to wring out the last pennies out of a dead mine. In order to avoid EPA fines, the mining company will divert the river and slowly kill Grace canyon.
Sell pinatas of peacocks. The ladies make two trips to Tucson with their peacock pinatas. The pinatas grab the attention of collectors of folk art and the media, and slowly, Grace's plight becomes known. An art dealer told the ladies how to register their town and their orchards on the National Register of Historic Places. They hope this will keep the mining company from diverting the river.
The Bread Girl. At the Christmas feast, Codi eats almost a half a loaf of bread. She thinks no one notices; she's wrong.
Hallie has been kidnapped by the contras and taken to Honduras.. Doc Homer got the call on Christmas. Codi calls everyone she can, including the Secretary of Agriculture, and the Stitch and Bitch Club starts a letter writing campaign.

She was present when her mother died.. Viola took Codi to see the helicopter take her mother to the hospital. Her father always insisted that she was not there, despite her perfect memory of that day. Doc Homer always told Codi and Hallie they were from Illinois, Codi is pregnant at the end of the book, and unfortunately, Doc Homer has died.
