Electric Boat. Ray works for Electric Boat for over 40 years He's laid off near the end of the book.
Domenico Onofrio Tempesta. 'Papa's real name was Domenico Onofrio Tempesta. Dominick shares his first name and several of his other traits, at least for awhile.
Nineteen. Thomas first shows signs when he's 19 and he and Dominick are in their freshman year at college. By the end of that summer he's totally broken down.
Sheffer. Lisa Sheffer is Thomas's case worker; she and Dominick become friends.
a man lost in the woods. In one of the most beautiful passages Dr. Patel tells Dominick that Thomas is like a man lost in the woods - and she is the person on the edge of the forest yelling to him and trying to guide him out. Sadly, Thomas cannot hear her and will remain lost in the woods. She goes onto say that perhaps there are two brothers lost in the woods and one of them can hear her and she will be able to guide him out. Of course the other brother is Dominick - and she does help him find his way out.
Prosperine. Prosperine was Violetta's long time partner in crime and lesbian lover. Domenico had to agree to take Prosperine in order to get Ignazia (Violetta). Turns out Prosperine was much more than he bargained for.
cleft-lip. Concettina was born with a cleft-lip; her palate was okay, just her lip was affected. Her father called her rabbit face and other cruel names.
Cancer. Concettina died from cancer but before she died she gave Dominick her father's manuscript.
Mrs. Calabash and Mrs. Floon. The two of them playing dress up and having tea turns out to be a big break through point for Dominick.
part of his leg has to be amputated. Ray has diabetes and his foot becomes gangrenous. The doctors have to amputate at the knee.
Ray. Ray tells him. His mother never wanted to tell him until he would be able to understand and deal with it. Dr. Patel makes him see that Ray is his father in every sense of the word and finally Dominick can put it all to rest.
It becomes a women's shelter. Dominick and Lisa and her girlfriend convert it into a shelter for women...a fitting tribute to his mother and to her mother before her and even to Joy.
Price. Dolores's maiden name was Price; her married name was Davis.
Jeanette. "I met Jeanette on my very first spin around the neighborhood. Spotting a girl my approximate age hula-hooping on a patio, I decided to impress her with my cycling skills, then miscalculated a curb, landing, mortified, under my still spinning wheels. 'Guess What?' Jeanette said as she hula-hooped toward me, oblivious to my bleeding knees. 'One of my Siamese cats is going to have kittens.'" And they were friends from then on.
