Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Lehane, Dennis
Sean and Lauren reunite. Sean finally calls Lauren and they talk. At the parade at the end of the book they are together with their daughter.
Two. We know he killed Just Ray and we know he kills someone near the end of the story too.
Yes. I'm not going to say who just in case you haven't read the book or seen the movie I don't want to spoil anything for you.
Jimmy. Jimmy has secretly sent them the money for 17 years because he feels a sense of guilt over killing Just Ray.
Just Ray Harris. The gun belonged to Just Ray who was Brendan's father. The police traced it back to a liquor store hold up from 17 years prior.
Wolves. Dave calls them the wolves. "The Boy who was taken by Wolves".
Brendan. Brendan gets put in a holding cell while Sean mulls over the case. Brendan's lawyer comes and gets him out of there. Dave is never held, he's just questioned and released. Jimmy's never questioned as a suspect and Bobby never appears other than as a reference by other people.
a Sprite. Dave's badly hungover, and keeps asking for a Sprite.
Celeste. Celeste freaks out after Dave becomes increasingly strange. She goes to Jimmy and tells him everything that's happened. Jimmy asks her flat out if she thinks Dave killed Katie and she says yes.
helping a buddy move a couch upstairs. Dave tells Jimmy it was the couch, but he tells the police it was when he was playing pool.
his velvety smooth voice. Many times throughout the book Lehane describes Sean's voice as being smooth, velvety, etc. He's a Trooper so he has short hair, I don't think they ever mention his eyes or lips.
Nadine's first communion. Katie's younger sister Nadine is having her first communion. Dave is arrested several days later, Celeste leaves Dave the night before he's arrested and Lauren doesn't return until the very end of the book.
she left him. Sean's wife Lauren had an affair. She turned up pregnant and Sean thought maybe the baby wasn't his. She left him while she was pregnant and they haven't spoken since. She calls him on the phone but she won't talk, she just stays quiet.
Bobby O'Donnell. They think Bobby might have hired someone to kill Katie or did it himself. They go question Roman and find out that Bobby was in jail the night Katie died and his crew have alibis. The murder seems too brutal to be an impersonal hit...so they move on to Brendan and Dave as potential suspects.
"I was mugged". He tells Celeste that a crackhead tried to mug him and quotes the guy as saying "Your wallet or your life, I'm leaving with one of them." Celeste thinks that's something you'd only hear in a bad movie or tv show...and she's right.
inside Pen Park. Katie is behind the drive-in movie screen in Pen Park.
a State Trooper. Sean is a State Trooper.
Cottage Market. Just Cottage Market. Jim is a simple guy.
Annabeth. Jimmy is Katie's father and Marita was her mother, Marita died when Katie was five and Jimmy married Annabeth.
McGills. It was at McGill's. Every bar listed is an actual stop they made that night, but McGill's is where they danced on the bar.
19. Katie is 19 and has been out of school for a year. She's in love with Brendan and planning to elope with him to Las Vegas.
Brendan. In the present we meet Brendan who is thinking of how in love he is with Katie and their plans to elope.
11. The boys are 11 years old and have been friends for one year because Jimmy and Sean's father both work for the same place, but in very different positions.
Boston. The story is set in the Boston neighborhood of East Buckingham.
Get off Shutter Island. He told Chuck he wanted to find a way off the island to get them home. Chuck said he predicted he wanted that. Teddy asked him if he had any ideas. Chuck said to give him a minute. Then Chuck raised his hand and shook his head at Dr. Cawley at the same time, then Cawley said something to the warden and they started walking towards Teddy with four orderlies behind him. One of the orderlies was holding a white bundle. Teddy asked Chuck if he thought they were on to them. Chuck said he and Teddy were too smart for that. Teddy said they were.
Teddy made his way to the lighthouse, which wasn't easy, where Dr. Cawley was. While he was there Chuck came up too. What do Chuck and Dr. Cawley reveal to him? | "Shutter Island" by Dennis Lehane
|
They were trying to make him realize he was Andrew Laeddis. Chuck tells him that he is really Dr. Lester Sheehan, his psychologist for the past two years. Dr. Cawley told him that he basically been in his own play for two years, and the ending was him reaching the lighthouse. Teddy had given Sheehan the name Chuck Aule. Everything in the story of his investigation had been faked. They had been trying to bring him back to believe he was his true self through the experiment because they thought lobotomy was not the way to do it. They told him if he did not realize he was Andrew Laeddis, he was going to be lobotomized. Then they try to reason with him, they told him he had assaulted George Noyce two weeks before. They told him Noyce had called him Laeddis, but Teddy/Andrew had thought he had been referring to him and Laeddis, not just him, which Noyce was. They told him he had murdered Dolores. Teddy didn't believe them, and he was brought to Ward C.
Teddy and Chuck left Ward C to go the lighthouse. Teddy and Chuck got separated after Teddy climbed down some rocks to code them. Teddy went looking for Chuck and went into a cave. Who did he find in that cave? | "Shutter Island" by Dennis Lehane
|
Rachel Solando. Rachel told him that she never had children and that she was never married. She said she was "more than just a patient." Teddy asked her how she could be. She said she was the first female doctor at Ashecliffe. She said that they did lobotomies on patients at Ashecliffe and that she protested. They couldn't let her leave, though. She said that they were creating what she called "ghosts" at Ashecliffe, people that couldn't feel pain, love, or sympathy, and had a wiped memory bank. Teddy fell asleep, and, after waking up, left Rachel in the cave. Before he left, Rachel said he would never leave and that he had no friends.
Teddy had a motive for wanting the case, to take revenge on Andrew Laeddis, the man who lit the fire that killed Teddy's wife Dolores. Teddy and Chuck went to look around Ward C, where the most violent and disturbed patients were kept, looking for Laeddis. What patient told him where Laeddis was, and that everything on the island was just a game for him? | "Shutter Island" by Dennis Lehane
|
George Noyce. George was standing in the corner of a dark room when Teddy lit a match in order to see him. George was mad at Teddy because he blamed Teddy for getting him into the institution. George said that all Teddy wanted was to kill Laeddis. George also spat in his face. George said Dr. Cawley was doing a study by bringing in the most violent patients to Shutter Island. Then George said to Teddy that all of it, as he swept his hands around the air above him, was for him. Teddy then asked him about the hurricane, how they could have thrown that in. George couldn't explain it. George asked if he had ever been truly alone during the trip; Teddy said all the time. George asked him if he meant completely alone. Teddy said he had been with Chuck. George then asks him about Chuck, if and why he trusted him. George told him Laeddis was in the lighthouse, and Teddy left.
A dream. The dream involved Teddy's wife, Dolores, coming towards him down the hallway. She had found one of his stashes of beer and asked him if he was ever sober. Teddy couldn't speak and couldn't see or feel his body. Dolores's back was charred and slightly smoldering. Then they went to the window and Dolores told him that he could not leave, and that Rachel and Andrew were on the island. Andrew was the man who lit the match that caused the fire that killed Dolores. Teddy pleaded with her to stay, but Dolores told him that he had to let her go. The dream ended with Teddy holding her. Teddy woke up at five o'clock, grabbed his notebook where he had written Rachel's code, and began to break it. It took him until six o'clock.
a sheet of paper. The sheet of paper read: THE LAW OF 4
I AM 47
THEY WERE 80
+YOU ARE 3
WE ARE 4
BUT
WHO IS 67?
Teddy says he thinks they could be three, him, Chuck, and Dr. Cawley. Teddy says it would be a reach that Rachel could predict that after Chuck asked him how she could.
Rachel Solando. When they got to talk to Dr. Cawley, the head Doctor and psychologist at the island, Teddy looked through his notebook. He read aloud that she escaped within the last 24 hours. She had escaped the previous night, between 10 o'clock and midnight. She still hadn't been found. Rachel was a war widow, she drowned her three children in the lake behind her house. She still thought they were alive.
