Lisey's Story
Debusher. 'The one time Debusher girls of Lisbon Falls' is how Lisey and her sisters are described.
Yes, those sisters. You could say that the main female protagonists in 'Lisey's story' are Amanda and Lisa, but Darla plays a pretty big part too, Jodotha is in Miami, but what's the name of the fifth sister? | 'Lisey's Story'. Part One 'Bool Hunt'
|
Cantata. My dictionary describes 'Cantata' as a choral composition. Amanda named her daughter Intermezzo (a short dramatic, musical, or other entertainment of light character, introduced between the acts of a drama or opera). Little surprise that 'Metzie' ran away with a truck driver!
In 'Lisey's Story', all her troubles after Scott's death start with the appearance of Professor Joseph Woodbury of the University of Pittsburgh English Department. What was his extremely popular lecture class called? | 'Lisey's Story'. Part One 'Bool Hunt'
|
Scott Landon and the American Myth. Incunk (the name Scott and Lisey give to people like Professor Woodbury) comes from Incunabulist - a collector of very early printed books - known as incunabula. I thought I'd explain this, because Lisey remembers the word as incuncabilla.
When Amanada and Lisey in 'Lisey's Story' are going through Scott's magazines, Amanda starts acting a little nutty, and jotting down numbers in a little notebook. She notes 846 of the magazines have pictures of Lisey in. Why does Amanda circle 'over six hundred of them'? | 'Lisey's Story'. Part One 'Bool Hunt'
|
Lisey has been treated discourteously in the photo caption. Isn't it wonderful the way one's nearest and dearest find the best way to hurt us? In one, Lisey is anonymous as Scott's 'Gal Pal'. But Amanda couldn't have circled the ones of them looking happy, or in love, could she?
Gerd Allen Cole. The others were also there. Dashmiel 'ran like a rabbit' and 'Ton-eh' wrongly got Lisey's credit for stopping Cole from Heffernan.
A bool. A bool, as you know, can be a joke or harmless prank. The entire "book" (which Lisey though on first sight was a thousand pages) read 'Ike came home with a boom, and everything was fine. BOOL! THE END'. The book that made Scott and Lisey rich was his third, 'Empty Devils'.
An Ingmar Bergman. A Swedish movie, probably with subtitles. No wonder Lisey would have preferred the Redford! But she was furious with Scott for arriving late and drunk, so Scott gave her the blood-bool to make it right...
The man Professor Woodbury sends to get the books from Lisey calls himself Zack McCool on the phone when they first speak. Does Lisey believe that's his name? | 'Lisey's Story'. Part One 'Bool Hunt'
|
No. Lisey retorts that she's 'Liz Taylor' so 'McCool' replies 'You wanted a name, I gave you one' - pretty unanswerable logic!
the freesias . This is what Cole is babbling as he goes to shoot Scott. Presumably it meant something to him!
No. At some point doing that interesting night, when Lisey learns she's on a quest, Amanda has lapsed into catatonia.
Strap On Whenever It Seems Appropriate. "Strap On", I think means, get it on...it seems to be whatever you're expecting won't happen, so just deal with it. I love some of the thoughts and ideas in this book.
In 'Lisey's Story', Scott had arranged for Amanda to go into a nursing home suitable for her passive semi-catatonia before he died. What was its name? | 'Lisey's Story'. Part Two 'SOWISA'
|
Greenlawn. Lisey was amazed to find out that Scott had gone to all that trouble five years ago and never told her...
A little Scott Landon general knowledge now. When Lisey's smoking cigarettes in the Patel's parking lot, she remembers all the things Scott knew. Like: who owned the pool hall in 'The Last Picture Show'? | 'Lisey's Story'. Part Two 'SOWISA'
|
Sam the Lion. This book will surely make you want to see 'The Last Picture Show', so I'll tell you that 'Sam the Lion' is played by Ben Johnson. Hamish the Hamster belongs to me, and likes to appear in quizzes...
PT Cruiser. Lisey and Zack pass on the road after he's put the dead cat in her mailbox. Experienced Stephen King fans will recognise the wrong answers from 'Christine', 'The Shining' and 'Cujo'
Jim Dooley. That is the name that Professor Woodbody knows him as, but there's no reason to think it's his real name any more than Zack McCool was.
What was the name of the bar where Professor Woodbody and 'Zack McCool' sat and complained about Lisey, calling her Yoko and moaning about how she was hanging on to Scott's stuff? | 'Lisey's Story'. Part Two 'SOWISA'
|
The Place. What an imaginative name for a pub! Woodbody goes there because it reminds him of his blue-collar father. Sweet!
Bremen. Scott and Lisey are not happy in their draughty house, but for some reason they bring the bed back with them...
Scott and Lisey were married on November 19, 1979. What 'riff on a Winnie the Pooh title' did they hand-letter on their souvenir matchbooks? | 'Lisey's Story'. Part Two 'SOWISA'
|
'Now We Are Two'. A 'riff' on 'Now We Are Six'. If you haven't read it, along with 'Winnie The Pooh', 'The House at Pooh Corner' and 'When We Were Very Young', go and do so! All the original animals are in the New York library - set them free to come home!
No. Sitting under the 'yum-yum tree' Scott explains that the Landons and lunacy go together 'like peaches and cream' and he doesn't ever want to pass it on,
Sweetheart Hill. Paul goes 'bad-gunky' so Scott tries to take him to Boo'ya Moon to cure him but can't. So his Daddy shoots Paul and Scott takes him to Sweetheart Hill and buries him.
It's made by Oxo. It belongs in the kitchen. Scott had called it 'Lisey's yuppie-church key'. It's got 'heavy-duty rubber handgrips'. What does 'Zack McCool' use to mutilate Lisey? | 'Lisey's Story'. Part Two 'SOWISA'
|
can opener. I really don't even want to think how he used it....
Maine Wolf. Maine Coon is a sort of cat, so I don't think a brewery would like the jokes about what it tastes like! Victoria Bitter is a great Australian beer and Strongbow's the (alcoholic) cider I drink. Perhaps a US quizzer could let me know if Maine Wolf is a real beer and if it's good?
F. Scott's 'Long Boy', 'Freddy' ate him alive after Lisey hit 'Zack' with the spade. A thotoughly nasty end for a thoroughly nasty guy!
Romanian Brandy. Lisey suggests making hot chocolate but Amanda wants brandy. It was something given to Scott and tastes vile. They decide to get out without the hot chocolate.
Who's the Country and Western singer that Scott worshipped, mentioned several times in 'Lisey's Story', who is singing as Lisey and Amanda drive away? | 'Lisey's Story'. Part Two 'SOWISA'
|
Hank Williams. Whether he's singing 'Jambalaya', 'Honky Tonkin' or 'Kaw-Liga' in 'The Last Picture Show', Hank is a recurring theme...Hope you enjoyed the quiz - only one more to go!
John Doolin. Doolin may have killed his family at nine years old and Lisey is sure in her own mind that he also met Cole, the madman who shot Scott earlier. Jack Torrance you will recognise from 'The Shining' and Robert Gray is one of Pennywise's many guises from 'It'.
the African. The yarn of which is 'the old strings' which lead 'you to the prize at the end of the bool hunt'.
Two dollars. Scott's got to think very quickly, as his Daddy is waiting behind the door to kill Halsey if he comes in. He's so patronising to Scott that for a moment, Scott wishes his daddy would...one dollar's for him, and the other's for poor, dead Paul
Yellow. The Afghan is Lisey's anchor, to take her to Boo'ya Moon or home.
University of Maine. After the Incunk, Professor Woodbody, Pittsburgh would never have been given them! The Library of Congress would have copies of the published ones anyway.
le car Jimmy Cagney. I know what they mean! I wish they'd brought the PT Cruiser convertible out before I bought my convertible...I am indebted to AltaVista's Babelfish for its translations of gangster's car, hot rod and cool cat.
