Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information

    Rees, Celia

William’s mother used to be what, to the Kington family?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Nancy's wet nurse. Nancy says she has always known William and his mother, Mari, because Mari was her wet nurse and William was her playmate.

What ship does William first sail on?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

The Amelia. When he is twelve, William's father sends him off to work as a cabin boy on one of Nancy's father's ships. She is bound for Kingstown Jamaica, straight, or so William thinks. Nancy doesn’t have time to tell him the Amelia is a slaver before he leaves, and William doesn’t know until they’ve cleared the Channel. The Sally-Anne is the ship Nancy sails for Bath on, the Deliverance is what Broom's crew later names their ship, and the Dolphin seems to be one of the most common ship's names ever.

Who is the suitor in Bath that seems the most interested in Nancy (or her money, more likely)?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Mr. James Phillips Calthorpe. Nancy is envied for his attentions by some of the girls, but Nancy doesn’t like him at all, finding him to be, "shallow and vain with a vastly inflated opinion of himself." When he later insults both William and Nancy, Nancy punches him in the nose, and never needs to worry about his suits again.

How does Mr. Kington die?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

From apoplexy. If you don't know, an apoplexy is a stroke, and those were much harder to recover from in the 1800’s than they are nowadays. Before he dies, Nancy's father makes his two oldest sons, Joseph and Henry, promise to take care of the family’s debts.

What is the cross Bartholome wears made of?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Diamonds. Nancy mentions it during the funeral for her father. Everyone seems to think Bartholome is being too showy in his love of God with his large cross and falling to his knees in genuflection halfway to the alter.

What is Graham's first name?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Niall. When he introduces himself to Nancy he says, "I’m Graham, Niall Graham. Ship's surgeon. I've come to see how you are." This is when Nancy is feeling seasick onboard the Sally-Anne. Graham cheers her up by talking to her, and amazingly he knows William and agrees to helps Nancy send a message to him. Graham is one of Nancy’s closest friends, and later wants her to pose as his daughter.

When Joseph first comes to Fountain Head while Nancy is there, what else, besides chicken and rice, does Phillis prepare?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Sweet potato and beans. Joseph complains that the food is too spicy, and therefore mostly drinks rum the whole evening.

What African city did Phillis live in when she was a child?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Dahomey. After Nancy befriends Minerva, Phillis will sit with them while shelling beans and tell about her past. She usually starts with her capture in Dahomey. Her father was accused of plotting against the king, so the whole family was arrested and sold into slavery.

What does Graham want Nancy to do when he first sees her on board the Deliverance?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Hold down a boy whose leg he is amputating. At first Graham pretends he doesn't recognize Nancy in her men's dress, but after she manages not to faint while he amputates the leg, he says, "You did well. Thank you. I didn’t expect to see you, Miss Nancy. Not under these circumstances."

To what does Broom compare Jessop's last effort to draw a device?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

A painted pig's bladder over a couple of sticks. The device Broom designs for the Deliverance is supposed to be a cutlass, a skull and crossbones, and an hourglass, the meaning being, "Time is running out and it will be death to resist." However, Jessop, the sail maker, cannot draw as well as he can sew. Nancy ends up making the device; drawing the skull from the ones she remembers in memorials at St. Mary Redcliffe church, and borrowing a cutlass from a passing pirate.

Which of the men is the quartermaster?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Pelling. There is no one like the quartermaster on an ordinary vessel, and Ignatius Pelling is a very good one. Since Broom is a new captain, he needs extra help relating to the crew in a fair way. Pelling is the one who comes up with the idea to pose as a merchant ship and sell off all their plunder.

During the equator-crossing ceremony for Minerva, Nancy, and Andrews, the crewmembers that were on Low’s ship begin a mutiny. What do they first try to do to Broom?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Keel-haul him. At first the crew makes it seem all in good fun to keel-haul the captain, and I imagine Broom is hoping that is what it is, but it's not. All the officers and some of the original members of the crew are tied up, and Broom would most likely be killed except that Vincent's ship appears in the nick of time.

Where does the Flying Dutchman, Bartholome's ship, finally catch up with Nancy and her friends?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Off the coast of Madagascar. Nancy hopes going to Madagascar will confuse Bartholome and make him give up his search for her, or at least detour him. But he finds her again, and it is then that they have their final battle.

Do Minerva and Vincent retire to a cabin with silk sheets on the bed after their wedding?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Yes. Abe Reynolds prepared it for them, with silk sheets on the bed that are, "courtesy of the Brazilian geezer," better known as Bartholome.

What do Minerva and Nancy toast to at the end of the book?"Pirates!" by Celia Rees

Youth, freedom, and booty. After they drink they throw their cups in the water, and as they stood at the rail, laughing together, Nancy says she, "Truly believed there was nothing she could not do."
