Assistant Law Professor. At the start of the story we find Nat teaching The History of Justice at Penn Law. She is coming up to her tenure year and is nervous about whether her tenure will be renewed.
an A cup in a double-D bra. Standing in a large auditorium to teach The History of Justice to only nine students would be rather disappointing, especially if you love the subject you're teaching (as I have found to my bemusement). Being a man, feeling like an A cup in a double-D bra is something I know nothing about.
"The Merchant of Venice" is used during the book as a teaching aid to explain a point of law. What does the tutor do to engage the students flagging interest in the point of law they are discussing? | "Daddy's Girl" by Lisa Scottoline part 1
|
act out the trial scene from "The Merchant of Venice". Faced with little interest in her subject, and with the Vice Dean in attendance, Nat became desperate and co-opted the students and the Vice Dean into re-enacting the famous trial scene from "The Merchant of Venice". It was a great success.
Angus Holt. Angus is the faculty hunk who gives Nat support throughout the book. James McConnell is the dreaded Vice Dean, a man of bureaucratic mien, who tries to remove Nat from the university while the Dean is on holiday. Kyle Buford is a violent convict who attacks Nat later in the book. Tanisa Shields is a Corrections Officer and appears early in the story.
Correction facility. Central to the book is Nat's visit to the Chester County Correction Facility. Angus had persuaded her to give her "Merchant of Venice" lecture to a class of inmates. It is at the beginning of the lecture that the events about to happen start to unfold.
Kyle Buford. Kyle Buford and Pat Donnelly are new entrants into the class of inmates. Holt, whose class it is, did not know they had been enrolled into his class and is not happy about their inclusion. Buford viciously assaults Nat after a riot starts at the beginning of the class. Saunders is a Corrections Officer at the facility who ends up dead; the story then unfolds from his last words told to Nat.
Ray Saunders. Nat, whilst fleeing from Buford, finds a CO in the room where Saunders is dying with a knife in his body. With him is a dead inmate. Milroy and Johnston are the troopers who question Nat about the attack by Buford and the circumstances surrounding Saunders' death.
Migraine. Nat visits Barbara to tell her what her husband's last words were. Barbara is perplexed by what Nat tells her because she hoped that they would have been words of love and support. They were not.
Because of Barbara's debilitating illness the visit is cut short and Nat has to go back a second time after the funeral. During the funeral something happens at Barbara's house. What happened? | "Daddy's Girl" by Lisa Scottoline part 1
|
it was burglarized. While the funeral was taking place the Saunders house was burglarized and a lot of damage was done to the furnishings in the house. When Nat hears of this she becomes suspicious and becomes determined to see Barbara again.
it's under the floor. Saunders has left something for his wife and his dying words are his way of communicating where it is. However this ambiguous statement is of no help to Barbara and Nat during their search of the house and so Nat has to go searching elsewhere for the truth.
building trade. Natalie's family are building contractors. Natalie has been taught how to read building plans, which comes in handy when she manages to sneak a look at the plans to the building work at the correction facility and discovers that a tunnel has been built under the facility to enable the escape of one of the prisoners.
As Natalie and Angus visit the Correction Facility they spot some U.S Marshals parked outside in the parking area. They are there because there is a federal prisoner in the Correction Facility. Who? | 'Daddy's Girl' by Lisa Scottoline part 2
|
Richard Williams. Richard Williams is being held on charges of distribution and murder amongst other things. Shields and Saunders are Correction Officers and Buford is the prisoner who attacks Nat.
he was knifed to death. Saunders was knifed during the riot by someone with a shiv. He was found dying by Natalie. With him was a prisoner who was already dead and another corrections officer who went to help Angus Holt with Buford.
Paul Greco. Throughout his scenes in the book Paul Greco is constantly portrayed as speaking at full volume. Both he and John Jr are Nat's brothers. Hank is Nat's boyfriend and practically part of the Greco family.
Joe Graf. Joe Graf killed Saunders because Saunders had found out about the tunnel that Graf's brothers' construction company was building to abet the escape of the federal prisoner Richard Williams. Upchurch was also dead at the scene when Saunders was found and initially the blame for Saunders death was placed on Upchurch. Brooke was the lawyer who represented Nat during her police interrogation. Rosato had been hired by Nat's father to represent her if Nat was charged and sent to trial.
Phoenix Construction. Phoenix Construction is building the escape tunnel for Richard Williams whilst rebuilding the Correction Facility. The owner of the construction company just happens to be the brother of Joe Graf, a Corrections Officer at the prison where Williams is being held.
