Mikey McGill. Mikey and Megan McGill died when they jumped though an empty train car and were hit by another train. Mikey fell to the center of the Earth and the only way he was able to get out was to lose his humanity and to make himself into a monster that could do anything. Thus he became the McGill, the most fearsome monster of Everlost.
Train and the Hindenburg. Mary travels with Nick and Vari to reach Allie and the McGill. They board a train first and are able to travel along dead tracks until they reach Lakehurst. Once there they meet up with a friend, Speedo, who is able to fly them the rest of the way on the Hindenburg.
The Haunter. The Haunter turns out to be practicing dark magic, but he has found ways to communicate and participate with the living world. He gets Nick and Lief to try to move a rock from the living world and when they are unable to he seals them in pickle barrels. He says that he will only release them if Allie agrees to study with him for five years.
You sink to the center of the Earth. The Afterlights learn that they are only able to stay for long periods of time in places where something has died. If they do not keep moving they will sink into the center of the Earth and remain there forever.
The Twin Towers. Apparently all things that are truly loved, or that have a lasting impression on the living side of the world can cross over to Everlost. Thus the Twin Towers are present in Everlost and provide a safe haven for the children.
Mary Queen of Snots. Mary took charge of all the "Afterlights" that she came across, thus the nickname of Mary Queen of Snots was somewhat applicable.
The McGill. Lief is scared to leave his forest as he has heard terrible things about the McGill and what it can do to people.
Lief. As the boy could no longer remember his name they gave him the name of Lief. The name was chosen because he had spent the last 100 years "living" in the trees.
the Chocolate Ogre. When Nick died, he had chocolate on his face. Since he died that way, he still has chocolate on his face in his afterlife. Mary started the nickname and also started rumors about him. She said told Afterlights to stay away from him.
Mary is known as the Sky Witch, and Allie is known as Allie the Outcast.
by holding onto a coin. Every Afterlight came into Everlost with a coin. Most did not know what the coins were for. When Nick found out what they did, he told every Afterlight he could. He went back to the Twin Towers and helped all of Mary's children to get where they were going. Mary, who knew all along about the coins, got extremely angry with Nick.
hanging Afterlights by their ankles. The McGill chimed his prisoners. He had 1000 Afterlights hanging in his ship. Because Afterlights can't feel pain, he used boredom to torture them. When he was bored, the McGill would swing them into each other.
the Sulphur Queen. The Sulphur Queen was a real ship that sank in 1963. According to the book, the ship crossed into Everlost. The McGill was a monster that kept many Afterlights prisoner, including Nick, Lief, and Allie.
possessing the living. Skinjacking was one of the criminal arts, according to Mary. Not very many Afterlights can skinjack. When Allie, Nick, and Lief went to see the Haunter, Allie found out she had powers. Later, she skinjacked for the first time on a ferry.
play an arcade game. Allie quickly realized that the Afterlights all did the same exact thing everyday. She told Nick about it and they both found it worrying. Lief started to play Pac-Man everyday. In life, he had never played video games.
New York City. Once they made it to New York, Allie and Nick were instantly drawn to the Twin Towers. In Everlost the buildings still stand tall. Mary Hightower, self-proclaimed leader of Everlost, lived in the towers with many children.
nine months. After they woke up, they met Lief, whose forest they had landed in. Lief had watched them sleep and had counted the days. He compared the long sleep to the time before someone is born.
car crash. They were passengers in two separate cars that had a head-on collision on the highway. They both went through their windshields and died.
