Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
The Dark Half
1989. One of the newer and lesser famous books by King.
"The Dead Zone" and "Cujo". Both "Cujo" and "The Dead Zone" are partially set in Castle Rock, Maine, where a large portion of "The Dark Half" takes place.
Pencils. A Berol Black Beauty pencil was all that Stark would, and probably could, write with. Thad, however, preferred the typewriter.
When someone found out that George Stark was really just a pseudonym that Thad used, Thad decided to do an article in a famous magazine to clear everything up, and also to announce that Stark was dead, and therefore would no longer write any novels. In which magazine was this article published? | "The Dark Half", by Stephen King
|
People. It was a light article, meant to expose him and keep light of the situation. Stark didn't think it was so funny.
Not a very nice guy. Neither Thad nor Liz Beaumont thinks Stark is a nice guy, even before he goes on his killing rampage.
The sparrows are flying. Stark has no knowledge of writing this on the wall, and Thad suspects that part of himself, inside Stark, wrote that as a message to himself. We never really find out at the end whether this is the case or not.
Homer Gamache. He used Gamache's prosthetic arm to beat Gamache to death. Donaldson, Clawson, and Ms. Cowley all die later in the book.
Psychopomp. Psychopomps are harbringers, or carriers, of the dead. It is a word I've never heard before, but www.dictionary.com confirms that King's definition is correct.
Toronado. A Black Toronado. The car, like Stark, appeared out of nowhere.
14. In order, they were: Homer Gamache, Frederick Clawson, Miriam Cowley, Michael Donaldson, an elevator guard, the two cops protecting Phillis Myers, Phillis Myers, two FBI telephone technicians, one cop protecting Rick Cowley, Rick Cowley, and the two cops protecting Liz Beaumont and her kids.
William. William and Wendy (girl twin) have a close relationship and are very similar even though they are not identical twins.
Castle Rock. Thad has a nightmare that he is being taken around his Castle Rock Summer house as a potential buyer. George Stark is the agent and tells him about fools stuffing, and Endsville.
Holt. Digger Holt found a hole dug in the graveyard with prints showing someone had climbed out of the hole and walked away. There were no prints leading to it though, and no-one was buried there.
Homer Gamache. When George Stark left the graveyard he hitch-hiked with Homer Gamache, then killed him.
Trooper Hamilton. Trooper Hamilton's favourite phrase is "Ask Mamma if she believes this" which he used when he found Homer's truck full of blood.
'THE SPARROWS ARE FLYING AGAIN'. This phrase is referred to a lot in the book. It means everything to Beaumont, and nothing to Stark.
Shaking Thad's hand. Thad offers Alan his hand and Alan, trying to avoid the inevitable awkward moment, informs him he has no intention of shaking hands.
She spills her beer. Liz and Thad did not like Clawson. Liz even calls him a 'Creepazoid', but neither of them wanted him dead. They even saw what he did as a kind of favour.
Darwin Press. Darwin Press mailed the royalty checks directly to Thad after deducting the agent's comission and sending it to him.
A huge oak desk. It was at this desk Thad wrote his self interviews and "automatic writing".
The things he wrote down while in a 'trance'. While in a trance Thad wrote things like: 'terminate' 'Mir' 'sis' 'cuts' 'razor' 'flying again' 'sparrows' 'endsville' 'phone'. While Stark was in her house Miriam rang Thad and told him not to let Stark cut her.
Sheriff Pangborn. Alan is off duty so Norris answers the phone and takes a long time to give Thad Alan's home number.
Reporter. Michael Donaldson, reporter for People magazine, was first to die in this chapter, then the photographer Phyllis, and her police guards, and last Rick the agent, and one of his guards. The three preceeding this chapter were: Homer Gamache, Frederick Clawson, and Miriam Cowley.
Alan Pangborn . Alan does not believe Thad's story about George Stark coming to life.
He only says he's not Stark. When he calls, Stark tells Thad he is finished killing now, as he has just killed the girl from Darwin Press. He also tells Thad not to think he is Stark because he made that mistake himself.
Mushroom. Wendy fell down the stairs and got a bruise on her leg. After the twins' nap Wendy's bruise had turned dark purple and William had one exactly the same.
All of these (How to communicate with Stark, He is the knower and bringer of the sparrows, He was is some way at the murder scenes). He realises he can get into Stark's head and find out what he's thinking. He also finds out he brought the sparrows, and that because George didn't know about the sparrows Thad must have, in some way, been at the murder scenes.
Berol Black Beauty . George Stark only writes with Berol Black Beauty pencils.
Rawlie DeLesseps. Thad asks Rawlie what mythical properties a sparrow has. After looking through a book Rawlie tells him sparrows are psychopomps, "... their job is to guide lost souls back into the land of the living. They are, in other words, the harbingers of the living dead."
Beth. Stark tells Liz that Thad would have called her Beth if he had thought of it.
A milk truck. The milk truck was part of Thad's plan to get away. Although he couldn't be sure it would come, it did.
