Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Westerfeld, Scott
Clancy St. Claire. Until Chapter Fifteen mentions his first name was Clancy, we only know him as St. Claire.
1967 Mercury. Jessica's first question to the Midnighters, when they went to the museum, was why and how they used a hubcap as a weapon against the darkling panther.
The Discovery Channel. Rex is a Seer, and often talks about Midnighters lore.
Jess Shady. Constanza commented on writing an article about Jessica and her police encounter, but Jessica said only if she calls her "Jess Shady".
Aerospace Oklahoma. At Aerospace Oklahoma Jessica's mother designs the shape of the wings for planes.
11:03. At the beginning of each chapter they list the time, the name of the chapter, and the chapter number.
Clovis Period Excavation Museum. The Midnighters come here and explain to Jessica about being one of the Midnighters.
thumbtacks. Jessica placed thirteen thumbacks in her door. Thirteen is a special number for the Midnighters, it can help ward off darklings.
Mrs. Hardaway. In biology, the class experimented with worms and light.
Polymath. A Polymath has the ability to calculate math at any given second.
the Snake Pit. To discover what her talent is, Jessica has to travel to the Snake Pit.
Cowgirl. Rex has been calling Melissa "Cowgirl" since childhood. Melissa and Rex were the first Midnighters.
Beth's, her sister's. When Jessica came into Beth's room she was terrified at her stillness and white pallour.
Ada Lovelace. Dess likes to fiddle around with Ada Lovelace's mechanics and make her dance different ways.
Chicago. Jessica had never had the Midnight sensation until she moved to Bixby.
the water. Not many people agreed with Jessica. Most thought the water tasted fine and dandy.
Steve. Constanza took Jessica to the party, but she only went because it was close to the Snake Pit, and she needed to get there soon.
Obstructively. Every clean metal, untouched by darklings, needed a thirteen letter command word to make it set into action against the darklings.
green. Constanza was making fun of Dess, calling her number four in the list of strange things about Bixby.
Flame-bringer. Jessica's talent allowed her to bring electrical objects into the Midnight hour.
Salmon. At the very start of the book, Tally is staring across the river, waiting for darkness and watching the inhabitants of New Pretty Town party under a salmon, cat-vomit-pink sky. She wishes she were there with Peris.
Yes. Tally and Peris cut their palms with a penknife and let the wounds bleed together to seal their "best friends for life" promise. When Peris has the pretties operation, the scar, like all unwanted blemishes, disappears.
Two months and twenty-six days. Tally is astonished with Shay's answer because it is two months and twenty-six days until Tally becomes a pretty, too, meaning they have the same birthday (which is the ninth of September).
A tall white-blond one. "When the wallscreen changed, Shay fell over in a fit of giggles." Since Shay has olive skin, the white-blond color looks very odd, especially with the high hairdo, which makes it look like a dunce cap.
David. Tally thinks Shay wanting her to meet David is a joke, because no one lives outside of the city, and besides, who’s ever heard of the name "David" before?
A railway. The first clue is to "take the coaster straight past the gap." Once off the roller coaster track, Tally finds the railroad, which is another track, only it's "one that's long and flat". The hoverboards need a metal grid under them to hover, for which the train track works very nicely.
SpagBol. Tally gets very sick of SpagBol (also known as spaghetti Bolognese) by the time she reaches the Smoke, and is willing to give it to Croy, but Shay tells her SpagBol is hard to get in the Smoke and valuable for trade, so she should keep it.
People cutting down trees. "It seems weird at first," Shay says, "but it's the way the pre-Rusties lived too, you know?" In Tally’s world they use soy and other proteins in place of meat, and never cut down trees, so both of these things come as a shock to Tally.
Habanero pepper. The habenero pepper is the spiciest kind of chili pepper, and the powder burns when it gets in people's eyes. The Boss asks Tally if she’d rather take the bag of ancient magazines or the pepper powder. Tally wants the magazines, but then the Boss notices that she has no shoes on, so he makes her trade.
Yes. This makes it hard for Shay to keep her balance on the hoverboards when they are escaping, but Tally says there isn't time for her to take off her crash bracelets and give them to Shay.
Bubbly. Peris and Shay use this word several times throughout the book, and in the first chapter of "Pretties," Shay and Tally are worried that they won’t be "bubbly" enough at a party.
