Monkey. The Lord of the Flowers is a very vain, impatient person. So he says that he'll count to a thousand, and then the hole will close. Shimmer, though she desperately tries to shrink herself, barely makes it through in time, only making it because Monkey sticks his paw out the hole, grabs Shimmer, and hauls her out.

The Old Boy. The Old Boy, Monkey's master, had found Thorn and his dying mother in the woods. He could do nothing for the Queen, but he took Thorn and left him in Amity. He had also meant to leave a sack of gold with the boy, but he forgot.
