Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
No. Thorn expects one, but Shimmer is just too proud. And it doesn't really matter anyway, because after they capture Civet, Shimmer and Thorn become a team.
A stone. Civet says she chose to turn him into a stone because it would be as hard as his heart.
Noodles. Civet (not trusting Thorn, of course) at first thinks that he put poison in her noodles. But after Thorn takes a bite and is still unharmed, Civet eats the noodles, too. The she says, "You dirty little pig. You lost one of your hairs in the noodles." And Thorn shouts, "CHANGE!" and Monkey's chain starts spilling out of Civet's mouth.
|When Shimmer thinks Thorn is dead, she has a strange, helpless feeling. Does she compare this feeling to someone ripping off her wings and pitching her into the canyon?||"Dragon of the Lost Sea," by Laurence Yep
Yes. This is when Shimmer really realizes that Thorn is her friend, and that she couldn't abandon him even if she tried.
A tiger. There are actually three tigers, and they all work together to attack Shimmer and Thorn - though they're burned to a piece of paper before they can do much harm.
Reeds. Shimmer says they'll need them to get rid of the paper warriors that Civet will send to them.
An old woman. Civet is disguised as an old woman who's taking water to use with her master's ink. Monkey, always the trickster, decides to "play" with Civet by drinking all the water out of her buckets. Meanwhile, Shimmer is trying to get out the window, muttering that the fool ape never gave her time to tell him about the mist stone.
He couldn't remember where. Thorn is eager to know who his parents are, but then he's let down when Monkey doesn't remember where he saw Thorn's face before.
|When Shimmer goes temporarily blind because of the sun reflecting off the salt, Thorn says the only way they could keep on going was if Shimmer shrank herself and let Thorn carry her. Shimmer reluctantly agrees to this arrangement, as long as Thorn carries her on his back. True or false?||"Dragon of the Lost Sea," by Laurence Yep
t. Shimmer says, "All right. But on your back, mind you, not in front like some pet puppy."
Her body. Shimmer (confused and irritated at her affection) can't bear to see Thorn shivering on the ground, so she uses the side of her body and her wing to protect him from the blowing salt. Just before Thorn wakes up, though, Shimmer crawls back to her original place.
A wasp/deer/crane. The Keeper has many pets, all made of different pieces of animals.
|When Shimmer and Thorn are going into the Keeper's dense, sinister forest, Shimmer says that they'll need to put on disguises. What two things does Thorn ask to have for his disguise?||"Dragon of the Lost Sea," by Laurence Yep
Big muscles and a sword. But Shimmer doesn't want to frighten Civet off, so instead, Thorn gets bowlegs and thin, sallow arms.
A crossbow. Knobby (a fat, bowlegged man, as Shimmer describes him), comes into the kitchen with a candle and a crossbow. He says, "Stop where you are. I'm a deadly shot with this, the champion of four districts." Shimmer doubts this, however, since Knobby had forgotten even to pull back the crossbow string.
Unicorn. The villagers at the well are trying to get Thorn to tell them about how he saw the unicorn-not that they believe him. Stones are thrown at him, and when she sees how Thorn bears the pain and is still kindhearted, Shimmer says without thinking, "Yes, there's still a touch of a unicorn's light to him." When the villagers hear her say this, they turn on her as a new target for stones and cruel words.
t. This is after Indigo agrees to be part of Shimmer and Thorn's team. They hear the war drums, and Shimmer knows that they'll all have to be extra strong.
Increase and Joy. Indigo's mother died from a heart failure, they said, but Indigo thought that it was from lack of sunlight way down at the bottom of the sea. Then Indigo's father died when a shelving unit fell on top of him.
No. She actually wants to live in the Green Darkness. She says it reminds her of her own lovely forests in River Glen.
The Green Darkness. Monkey and Shimmer hold their breaths, knowing that the Lord of the Flowers doesn't like to be ordered (or even asked, really) to do anything. So they're quite surprised when the Lord says, "Yes, that might be pleasant."
Monkey. The Lord of the Flowers is a very vain, impatient person. So he says that he'll count to a thousand, and then the hole will close. Shimmer, though she desperately tries to shrink herself, barely makes it through in time, only making it because Monkey sticks his paw out the hole, grabs Shimmer, and hauls her out.
"Do not deceive". Thorn finds the dragon mirror, but at first neither he, Shimmer, nor Indigo can figure out what to do with it. Then Shimmer looks into it and sees that it only shows the one thing that isn't a duplicate, but is the real, magical object.
|When they go back to Sambar's palace with the Ebony's tears, the lieutenant from the southern seas is disguised to look like Monkey, so that he can catch Shimmer and the others if they come back. True or false?||"Dragon Steel," by Laurence Yep
f. It's actually the Grand Mage himself who is disguised as Monkey. Shimmer realizes something isn't right when "Monkey" doesn't brag for several minutes about the magic he's going to do.
Kelp. Though Chukar brings Lady Francolin a bucket of mussels, the poor Lady can't eat them, as she's only supposed to eat kelp because of her upset stomach.
History. Shimmer remembers Lady Francolin to be an old horror, so she's surprised when she meets the Lady again, and finds her to be an interesting and grandmotherly dragon.
|When Shimmer, Thorn, and Indigo are settling into the room that the dragons of the Lost Sea have given them, Chukar, Bulbul, and many others come and play some music for "Her Highness." What is the first song that they play?||"Dragon Steel," by Laurence Yep
The Weaver's Lament. Shimmer is almost in tears by this point. Then some of the other dragons bring in delicious foods, like jelly cakes. Shimmer can hardly believe that the dragons would go to so much trouble for her.
Slug. Slug has a stump for one wing, Wort has only one eye, Bulbul is extremely old, and Chukar has an old scar with rheumatism. Shimmer is horrified that her clan could have gone into such poor condition, and she's furious at her Uncle Sambar for treating them this way.
|What kind of room were Shimmer, Indigo, and Thorn in when they were escaping Sambar's guards and when Shimmer turned them into fish?||"Dragon Steel," by Laurence Yep
The old ballroom. The two guards who are after them are the pesky lieutenant from the southern seas and another, unfamiliar dragon. The unfamiliar one thinks she saw one of the fishes turn from green to silver, but the lieutenant (eager for a promotion), doesn't believe her and chases off after nothing. "Think Heaven that you can count on some people to be so consistently stupid," Shimmer thinks.
|When Shimmer and Thorn were locked in Sambar's dungeons, who had the idea to rearrange the tumblers in the lock on their cell?||"Dragon Steel," by Laurence Yep
Indigo. Indigo says she's no magician, but that if Shimmer could just rearrange the locks, that would work, since it's really just a form of shape changing.
XII. Sambar is the High King and also Shimmer's uncle. His title is "Sambar the Strong," but Shimmer says that all the magnificence and pomp in the world can't change what Uncle Sambar is - a worm lolling around on a head of lettuce.
Always assume the worst. Shimmer overlooks this rule when she and Thorn are being chased by the flame bird, but they somehow make it anyway, just as Thorn says they always do.
|When they're escaping the Smith and the Snail Woman's mountain, Shimmer turns the cauldron into something else, so that the Smith and his wife won't get the real thing. What does Shimmer disguise the cauldron as?||"Dragon Cauldron," by Laurence Yep
A hammer. Monkey grabs up "Thorn" (the cauldron) and he, Shimmer, and Indigo make their escape. The Smith and the Snail Woman still think that the "cauldron" they have is the real thing, though it's really just an ordinary hammer.
|Right before Thorn sacrifices himself for the cauldron, he tries to say something, but the words catch in his throat. What was he trying to say?||"Dragon Cauldron," by Laurence Yep
"It's my time". Thorn knew exactly when it was "his time," just as Civet said he would. And right then, Thorn felt an immense peace.
