blow a bugle. Teddy would blow the bugle at all times during the night, waking the neighbors.
"Charge!". The stairs were considered San Juan Hill.
Panama. Teddy was digging the Panama Canal in the cellar.
A body. He was looking for his notes on his next book against marriage because he didn't want Elaine to find them.
murder. Yep, two kindly old ladies who kill people.
Mr. Hoskins. Teddy was told that Mr. Hoskins was a yellow fever victim, so he buried him in the Panama Canal.
brother. Mortimer didn't recognize his brother because Jonathan had plastic surgery that made him look like Boris Karloff.
Dr. Einstein. Dr. Einstein was portrayed by character actor Peter Lorre.
Mortimer. He had hated Mortimer ever since they were kids. So it made perfect sense to kill him in order to have one more murder than his aunts.
No. "About forty, five foot three, 140 lbs, pop eyes, talks with a German accent, poses as a doctor." You would think that the police would have figured that one out.
No. Aunt Abby and Aunt Martha went to the Happy Dale Sanitarium with Teddy before the cops ever went in the cellar.
No. He was actually adopted. In reality he was the son of a sea cook.
Teddy Roosevelt . John Alexander plays Theodore Roosevelt...er...Teddy Brewster.
Reverend Harper: "Have you ever tried to persuade him that he wasn't Teddy Roosevelt?"
Abby Brewster: "Oh, no."
Martha Brewster: "Oh, he's so happy being Teddy Roosevelt."
Abby Brewster: "Oh... Do you remember, Martha, once, a long time ago, we thought if he'd be George Washington, it would be a change for him, and we suggested it."
Martha Brewster: "And do you know what happened? He just stayed under his bed for days and wouldn't be anybody."
'Here Comes the Bride'. Mortimer and Elaine had just got married downtown. They stopped by to tell the aunts, and so Elaine could pack a bag. Mortimer told her to whistle the opening bars from 'Here Comes the Bride' when she was ready to go, and they would run and get in the taxi. That poor taxi driver sat there for hours.
dig a lock for the Panama canal. Theodore digs 'locks for the Panama canal', which are actually graves.
the Oregon. The Brewsters were donating toys to needy children, but Teddy just couldn't part with this ship, "not the 'Oregon'!"
hat. They had a special cupboard to keep the hats in. It was a good thing they went away, because the cupboard was full.
wine. Mixed up special from grandfather's lab. It contains arsenic, cyanide, and strychnine in an elderberry wine base.
Woodrow Wilson. Theodore "You can't tell me to go to bed! I'm Teddy Roosevelt!"
Jonathan "I'm Woodrow Wilson; go to bed."
Boris Karloff. Raymond Massey played Jonathan Brewster, and got upset every time someone said he looked like Karloff. On stage on Broadway, Boris Karloff had the role of Jonathan Brewster.
the window seat. He looked in the window seat, where he saw a body. The body of Mr. Adam Hoskins, the aunt's latest victim.

Twelve murders. Jonathan insisted that he had 13, but Dr. Einstein set him straight:
Dr. Einstein: "You cannot count the one in South Bend. He died of pneumonia."
Jonathan Brewster: "He wouldn't have died of pneumonia if I hadn't shot him."
Dr. Einstein: "No, no, Johnny, you cannot count him. You got twelve, they got twelve. The old ladies is just as good as you are."
critic. Mortimer was a dramatic critic; the irony was that he wrote many books against marriage and at the beginning of the movie, he wed Elaine.
O'Hara. Officer O'Hara designed a play all about himself and forced Mortimer to listen to it.
elderberry. Aunt Abby and Aunt Martha poison old, lonely men with their elderberry wine.
cellar. Teddy thought that the basement was Panama, where he dug locks that served as graves.
acid scars. Martha's father scarred her permanently with acid.
Raymond Massey. Raymond Massey played the frightening Jonathon, making fun of Boris Karloff who played Jonathon onstage.
