she never told him her real name. Dan and Alice are back together, and getting ready to leave on a trip to New York. Dan pressures Alice for the truth about whether she and Larry slept together, but she realizes he wouldn't be able to forgive her for it. Dan leaves to get cigarettes, but comes right back. Alice tells him that she doesn't love him anymore, which in her mind makes it OK for her to leave him (she had told him when they first met that if she still loved someone, she wouldn't leave them). When she arrives back in New York and goes through customs, her passport shows that her name really is Jane Jones. Dan is later walking through the same park he and Alice went to when they first met, when he sees a plaque showing the name Alice Ayres.

When she is in the strip club with Larry, he keeps giving her money and asking her name. She keeps telling him "Thank you, my name is Jane." So she really is telling him the truth, but he doesn't believe her.
