she never told him her real name. Dan and Alice are back together, and getting ready to leave on a trip to New York. Dan pressures Alice for the truth about whether she and Larry slept together, but she realizes he wouldn't be able to forgive her for it. Dan leaves to get cigarettes, but comes right back. Alice tells him that she doesn't love him anymore, which in her mind makes it OK for her to leave him (she had told him when they first met that if she still loved someone, she wouldn't leave them). When she arrives back in New York and goes through customs, her passport shows that her name really is Jane Jones. Dan is later walking through the same park he and Alice went to when they first met, when he sees a plaque showing the name Alice Ayres.

He's very upset about it, and apparently couldn't get past it, because the next time we see him, he's going to Larry's surgery to tell him he wants Anna back.

three months. Wearing a pink wig, Alice is pretending she doesn't know who Larry is, even when they're in a private room together. When Alice says she's been doing this for three months, Larry comments that she started right after he (meaning Dan) left her. Alice is going by the name Jane, and Larry insists on knowing what her real name is. She insists her name is Jane, even after Larry keeps giving her money to tell him the truth.

obituaries. In London, Dan and Alice (Jude Law and Natalie Portman) first meet on the street after she's hit by a car. After being treated at the hospital, Alice and Dan spend some time getting to know each other. He tells her he writes obituaries (but is an aspiring novelist) and explains some of the euphemisms they use in them. She tells Dan that she has fled New York after a relationship ended. They visit a park where there are plaques with the names of people who died saving the lives of others. Dan mentions that he visited the park twenty years ago with his father just after his mother died. Dan introduces himself, and she introduces herself as Alice Ayres.

She invites Dan and Alice because Alice's photograph is part of the exhibition. After this point, only one or two of the main characters are in the same place. Only Anna and Larry are at the aquarium. In the strip club, it is just Alice and Larry, or Alice and Dan, and only Anna and Dan appear in the scene at the opera.

Jane. We find this out when Alice returns to America and we see her passport. However, we hear her name prior to this point. When she is in the strip club with Larry, he keeps giving her money and asking her name. She keeps telling him "Thank you, my name is Jane." So she really is telling him the truth, but he doesn't believe her.
Mike Nichols. "Closer" was based on Patrick Marber's play by the same name. Mike Nichols also directed "The Graduate" in 1967, for which he won a Best Director Oscar.
